I would give a meh to Grand Palladium Vallarta, we were there in 2018. We had been to the Grand Palladium on the Mayan Riviera side a couple times and really liked it, but the one in PV was not up to the same level of accommodation, service and food.

From Pto Vallarata, consider going to Guadalajara for a day or two - Mexico's third largest city.

I'm gonna piggyback here, but has anyone else been to Bahia Principe in Tulum?

Also an FYI, Air Canada is no longer flying people to the Barcelo Maya resort as of roughly a month ago.

we ahve been to cancun, mayan riviera and PV - and in terms of going back, personally, i'd really only want to stay in Cancun as i thought the beach was the best there.

however, i get wanting to stay away from the hurricanes. PErosnally, I'd push back the trip to outside of hurricane season.

We were at a resort in Mazatlan once when we were young and poor(er). About have the resort was Mexican guests.

We had a lovely dinner with a family from Guadalajara. At first the kids were speaking Spanish and the dad gave them a blast and apologized. He wanted them to work on their English.

It started out slow but really ended up as a great great meal. Super nice family.

We took the family to Bahaia Principe a few years ago (from what I recall Coba, Tulum, and Akumal are all connected). It is a big resort, but I would put it at better than average for families. If it is just my wife and I we have some places we like better that are adult only, but Bahaia Principe is just fine for a getaway with the kiddos. Drinks were solid, lots of activities, pools were good. Didn't see much of the towel game. Beach was ok. Food was family friendly and tasty.

Yeah they are all connected and they have a golf cart transit system to get between and around. Nice to have access to the other resorts dining options, pools, etc. (some limitations but not much if I remember right). If you have kids the Coba resort has a whole splash park area which is great.

I would echo the statement on the drinks, food and beach. Overall we really enjoyed it.

Hotel Xcaret - amazing hotel, great food, and it includes free entrance to all of the Xcaret parks around it too.

Can't wait to go back there

X is used this way in the Yucatan Peninsula :

https://yucatanliving.com/daily-life...-for-beginners

Quote:
The story goes that when the Spaniards arrived, they heard the Native Americans using an unfamiliar sound, namely “sh”. Since there was no such sound in Spanish, they represented it with the letter “X”. This caused all sorts of misunderstandings.

In Yucatec Mayan, “X” is pronounced like “ish” at the beginning of words signifying the female gender and like “sh” anywhere else. It tends to sound very soft, like the “sh” in “slush”. So,
  • The Mayan Archaeological zone of Uxmal is pronounced OOSH-mahl.
  • The Yucatan Fair in X’matkuil is pronounced ish-MAHT-koo-eel

In December 2019, we went to Excellence Playa Mujeres (https://www.tripadvisor.ca/Hotel_Rev...Peninsula.html)

This was our third resort vacation in Mexico, and it was definitely a step above all other resorts (previously went to Bahia Principe Luxury Sian Ka'an and the Grand Riviera Princess).

The Excellence resort had the best food, a pretty good beer selection, and amazing service. It didn't feel busy, and was miles ahead of the previous 2 resorts.

Also didn't get hit with Montezuma's Revenge, so that was a plus!

I did 2 years ago for Spring Break. I thought it was a decent resort. Very spread out. Lots of food options and great for the little ones.

have been to Bahia Principe twice now with family of 4 and larger family group. Its a great resort for families but really far from Airport (about 1 hr each way) so if you stay there I'd highly recommend using canada transfers for a direct transfer to and from resort vs the transfers that come with the package.

it was an additional $120CDN for the return transfer and you can pre-order been and soft drinks for $1 each (at that time). Not going to all the hotels was well worth the extra cost.

"Champing" at the bit, in before Textcritic.

On topic, we really enjoyed that resort a few years ago. The all-inclusive part was a little different, as we had to "sign" for everything at zero cost. I assume this was because some are on time-share or not all inclusive. It felt weird and I was paranoid I was somehow going to get dinged, but never did. It worked out better, as the service was better, having pizza on the beach was ridiculous and everyone had a ton of fun.

Are people booking Mexican trips now for the fall? I expect the border to be open by then, but I don't have the confidence to book a flight, yet.

Yep, booked the Riu in Cabo for mid-August. Just for me and my wife and another couple. Don't care how hot it is. We need a beach.

Riu will allow cancellation up to the day before and were using WJ points that we banked for the last few years. So not really worried about a last minute cancel from travel rules.

Although we cruise a ton, we really enjoy the Riu Resorts.
