I thought Las Canarias was awful. The paella was super mushy, like eating porridge. The sangria was super sweet and tasted like caramel. Service was poor, and we waited a long time between courses.
I'm not a picky eater and usually eat everything on my plate. None of us finished our meals or wanted them packed up.

Had lunch there at re:grub (burger spelled backwards) and the decor is weird. The owner tries to emphasize they compost and recycle so they place a lot of composite boards inside and outside of the restaurant. If you don't pay attention, you might think someone had just broke the windows last night.
Unfortunately, I find the burger and fries pretty ordinary. The homemade bun is way too crispy and the hand cut fries too dry. The food is not terrible but I have no burning desire to return as well. Frankly, I think the boutique burger food trend has been played out in Calgary.

Interesting. I had been a few times in the summer and loved the burgers! Will have to try again soon to see if the quality has changed or if it is just our subjective preferences.
I know that Clive Burger has seen a steep decline in quality since opening.
With the decor, I think the owner wanted to make it new etc. but didnt have a ton of money to spend on it.

I think it would be cool to have a thread for local owned restaurants.
I will start for my town:
Bamboo Hut (they have two other restaurants in Dead Rear, Blue Dragon and Sophear).
They are just of the lake shore, and serve Thai food. They don't have a website but here is the Urbanspoon for them:

Often they will shut down for a week or two for vacation. Great food.

Two local chefs and brothers are set to air in the Chopped Canada television competition. The episode is scheduled to be aired March 26 at 7 p.m., titled ‘Bro-Down Showdown’.
Brothers Dany, who operates Bamboo Hut in Sylvan Lake and Pete Sok, who operates Sophear in Red Deer, competed against one another on the show with the experience being one neither will ever forget.
“It was a great opportunity because we’ve worked with each other side by side for so long and to actually compete against each other is different but exciting at the same time,”Dany said.
“It’s fun to see your younger brother have the same vision as you. We’re in a business together. Competing in the title against me was fun,” Pete added.
Having the opportunity to compete on Chopped Canada and against each other was one they weren't going to give up.
Even being against each other for the prize of winning $10,000, the brothers wanted to challenge themselves to see what they could do in the kitchen, under the ticking clock and with unexpected ingredients.
Dany and Pete applied as individuals, but were paired with another set of brothers, forming the idea of pairing two sets of brothers up against each other in a competition.

Shameless self advertisement:
Come by our sushi restaurant; Sushi Toki! Great food, cozy family style atmosphere. We made a "Gaudreau roll" and called it "The Gaudroll" once as a featured roll. Pop by and maybe we can make it again.
Check our reviews and come decide for yourself if the food is good or not!

I enjoy it. good sharing dishes, the #### and bull are both delicious.
The cocktails are funky (gimmicky at times) but taste great
EDIT
Before I forget, get the salted caramel fondue!

You should definitely order a Slap Yo' Mama. All of their drinks have weird names but that one has this amazing concept where there's a pepper inside the ice cube in the drink, so as time goes on the drink gets more of a kick to it.

I havent eaten there in about a year, but I don't think you will be disappointed. Same company who owned the Ranch (they moved to Lakehouse) providing Canadiana cuisine similar to River Cafe.

I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned The Pie Hole yet. But holy cow it's good. There is actually a guy there making homemade pies all day (probably all night too). I bought a tortiere that blew everyone away and a chicken pie that was amazing and a bunch of Jamaican patties and some Lebanese cheese pockets. I really want them all again. I guess they're really busy and you get what you get...like don't expect a full menu all the time. But it all seems top level cooking. Can't wait for fruit season.

Haven't heard of that place but I'm always interested in some Jamaican patties and I'm really intrigued by the Lebanese cheese pockets.

If anyone used to eat at Sura and misses it, you can safely head back to what is now called Wayo and get food the way it's supposed to be!
They got the old chef back from Sura a couple months ago. I heard this, and six of us went last week for dinner. It was true, and it was delicious!! Much better than whatever crap they were serving when they first switched from Sura to Wayo.

I've always thought that those donairs looked disgusting. Worst looking donair meat imaginable with a ton of the sweet sauce.
