Are you kidding? At the time everyone in my life thought they were as close to Jesus as was humanly possible. I'd like to think that at some level I didn't buy into it all (a huge part of it being they preach prosperity gospel and we certainly weren't prosperous), but I was still pretty young...

Its kind of disappointing because who didnt know this?
Religious tax status in the US has been a joke ever since the IRS granted it to Scientology, these days pretty much anyone can get it as Jon Oliver hilariously demonstrates.

Oliver and crew have been on fire this season. I can only think of a couple segments that were NOT absolutely amazing and right on point. Seeing his 7 month correspondence with that one televangelist was both hilarious and depressing.

Its the follow-through that really makes it for me.
He doesnt just present a point and leave it at that, he goes the extra mile to prove it, for instance the correspondence with the Televangelist, setting up his own religion, the ad time on Trinidadian TV, the Mascot Suits, etc.
Its that extra that HBO allows him to go that really makes this show excellent.

Colbert really pioneered that style of satire journalism with his brilliant Super Pac stuff. I could definitely see that influence with Oliver's religion setup, especially stressing how everything they were doing was completely legal

When it works it really is next-level stuff. I don't know if I'd say Colbert pioneered it; a lot of the stuff he did was really silly and random as befit his character... Remember when he almost got a bridge in Hungary named after him?
Anyway, it reminds me of years and years ago when the Reform party introduced some ridiculous measure where if you could get 300,000 Canadians to sign a petition they'd put it to a vote in the House of Commons or something like that, and Rick Mercer successfully got the required number of signatures on a measure to force Stockwell Day to change his name to Doris.
