Vanek: 39 points in 812 minutes TOI, playing in a scoring role.
Versteeg: 8 points in 289 minutes, playing with brown pods and singing potatoes on a stone-cold fourth line, with spot PP duty.

Vanek is definitely an improvement, but it's not as big a deal as the raw numbers make it look. How much do you give up for that upgrade?

The Backlund thing is interesting. I don’t see a scenario where the Flames move him at the deadline. He’s too important to the team in its current state and doing so would throw in the towel on the season. Even though the team is on the playoff bubble, if they can get in, I don’t see a truly scary threat in the West. It is a year where any of the top 8 teams could go on a run.

I actually predict that he isn’t signed by the deadline, but is signed in the off-season before free agency. He wants to be here. They want him here. It’ll get done. Some stressful moments but it’ll get done.

I think they will add a winger, most likely a guy that they see as being able to perform better than they are now in their current situation. I COULD also see a scenario where a guy like Brodie is moved for a more long-term impact winger, but that feels like a summer move. I don’t see a big disruption to the core happening at the deadline. They don’t know enough about Andersson to feel like they can confidently slot him in the top 6.

To be honest, I forgot about Versteeg! I still think we could use Stempniak or Vanek. Even Leivo would be a decent option. Leivo has good numbers for someone who doesn’t get very much ice time.

He could still be an option of absolutely needed.

At the end of the day Bennett and Jankowski are staples on the third line.

Versteeg, Brouwer, Hathaway, Lazar, Stajan, Lomberg, Mangiapane , Hrivik, Foo can compete for the other 4 spots.

Ideally the Flames can add a top 6 forward and push Frolik down to the third line or perhaps give Tkachuk a longer look with Bennett and Jankowski?

One thing I want the Flames to balance this trade deadline is 'win now' vs 'expansion draft'.

I think the Flames can make some noise in the playoffs. I don't think they are seasoned enough to win the cup though - who knows. Maybe if they hit a home run on someone it could very well happen. I just hope that if Treliving makes any moves it is with a long-term outlook on the team (no rentals obviously) and it better be a cheap enough player that you don't mind losing when the expansion draft comes around. Flames are going to be one of the more exposed teams when it happens, if the draft rules carry-over from this past draft.

Bobby Ryan has a NMC. Would really suck in having to protect him for a likely expansion draft down the road.

This is true...but if he can come in and be a solid RW with a solid RH shot, he might vault the Flames into top 4 in the west status. Arguably the only piece missing in roster if he can be a 20-30 goal scorer and stay healthy

I do not think Jagr coming back is within the Flames' control.

If our GM was Marc Bergevin, we'd be trading Backlund before his new contract's NTC kicked in (a la PK Subban).

They did. Curtis Glencross was traded years ago.

I would like to get rid of the mediocrity that is your opinion. All you do is slag the team and its players, find a new hobby.
