So a clear tier below the generational type of talent that McDavid is.
Of course he has many years ahead of him, but the point is, it is stunning that Edmonton hasn't been able to get close with him and Leon on the team.
It's a remarkable level of failure. And must be incredibly frustrating as a fan.

Iginla and the Sedins did at least make the finals, which was your original criterion.

Ahhhh, they did lose to the cup champions...twice!!!!
You can't get any closer than that!*
*you can, in fact, get much closer than that,

If you include losing to the Stanley cup champion as the criteria for being close, then the list of players that have been “close” to winning a Stanley cup is enormous. This exercise was simply focusing on generational players that have played in the Stanley cup final. And I can’t think of any other than McDavid that have not made to at least one Stanley Cup final.

Era adjusted points, McDavid will have the most points without winning a cup.
Joe Thornton, Marcel Dionne, Jarome Iginla, Mats Sundin, and Adam Oates are the top five from I can tell looking at the list. He is probably close to breaking the top 20 this year.

the other name, in the 'made the finals' category, that although was hampered by injuries, but was supernova to start his career was Lindros

the other thing is that a lot of these guys- as pointed out- eventually at least made a finals (and of course there is still time for you know who)
Perreault took a near expansion team there in year 5 before his team getting stuck behind the Habs and Isles for the rest of his prime
Iggy and Kipper dragged Shean Donovan et al there
Oates a few times eventually
but Dionne, man. never even made it to the Semis I don't think, despite retiring was it 2nd overall in scoring when he hung them up?

Dionne never won a best-of-7 series in his career. Early in his time with the Kings, they won a couple best-of-3 Preliminary round series. The Miracle on Manchester in 1982 was the only best-of-5 series he won.

Thanked specifically for “Its a remarkable level of failure.”
If that’s not the perfect E=NG thread title, I don’t know what is.
