Even though violence and body horror isn’t really my thing in general, I thought The Substance was great. I don’t know that I would even call this a horror. It’s very tongue-in-cheek. Loved the hyper-real world, both lead performances and Dennis Quaid’s Vince McMahon-esque doosh. Was laughing and cringing a lot, so the self-aware humour definitely softens the blood.
One thing bugged me as well but not for the other spoiled reasons.
Otherwise I enjoyed it thoroughly, but sort of like Poor Things, I would only recommend it to a certain type of person.

It’s fall, horror gets all the views in that season. Then we get the rest of the movies.

Maybe it's because I'm getting older but I've definitely noticed a real lack of creativity in movies these days. Less risk taking by film makers. It's why we don't see the 70s 80s and 90s classics. I think that was the diamond era of film, those 30 years. So good in fact they decided that they needed to remake them all.
We're just getting cookie cutter platitudes now. Even in horror.
I mean there's not a ton of room for ingenuity any longer but at least try. I think that's the draw for A24 films, they're trying.

No more home video money to lessen risk.

I go to Apple TV to see the top movies of the week and at number one it's Wolfs. I saw it but it was so forgettable that I haven't even bothered to post about it. Big budget cinema has amounted to largely a lot of forgettable films with creativity sapped out to make the product as safe as possible.

Clooney and Pitt together are such assclowns. Just total drama geek, unfunny nerds who look like they're just horsing around versus trying to produce a good and entertaining product. I don't watch the Oceans 34 movies and I won't watch this drivel, either.
Check out My Old Ass for an actual good movie that didn't need a big budget or anything. Just a really fun and good movie.

I won't be watching this one either, but if you haven't seen it or the Oceans movies (which were entertaining for the most part IMO) which ones are you referring to? Burn After Reading was pretty good.

This Trump thing for some reason makes me think of one of my top 5 movies ever that no one talks about.
Everyone is losing their mind, catastrophizing something they had and have no control over that really won't harm them much. What I do all the time.
Parenthood - Cheesy simple movie with all the tropes, not brilliant but I loved it.
Steve Martin is a neurotic, anxious guy who wants everything perfect and is constantly worried he isn't good enough. But his kid Joaquin Phoenix is masturbating too much, his daughter a whore banging Keanu Reeves, his brother is a lech, his younger kid is probably ######ed a bit, his wife thinks he's ridiculous being stressed about it and you are understanding him.
His younger kid is having a birthday party he wants perfect and everything fatas up and its a shatshow and he's about to have a panic attack and he looks at his wife and she is having the time of her life watching it all go south. Rollercoaster that just keeps going up sucks ass, the downs make the entire ride.
Anyway, watch that movie if you are nostalgic at all.

Parenthood is one of my favourites. It's the perfect blend of comedy and drama. It hits especially hard as you and your family get older.
I know they made a TV show as well, but I never watched it.

In context of wanting to see a direct sequel to Aliens, I can see why it would disappoint. Knowing it wasn't that and just enjoying it for what it is probably helped.

I should revisit it. At the time Aliens was my favorite movie so I was disappointed. If you’ve read the book Aliens Phalanx, that’s what I REALLY want to see.
I once heard from a screenwriter friend that the movie “Cowboys and Aliens” with Harrison Ford and Olivia Wilde was originally an “Aliens” franchise script.
That could have been siiiiiick.

Which 2024 horror that I missed should I watch first?:
The First Omen, Oddity, Quiet Place: Day One, Humane, In a Violent Nature

Well I just watched Alien: Resurrection and can confirm that it indeed sucks something fierce. No need to revisit that one.

Joss Whedon should have been canceled for how terrible that script was.
Alien: Resurrection should have been a slam dunk, with that director, that cinematographer, that cast and a good budget. But the writing is just SO bad.

I will say with The First Omen if you find it a little slow in the first half of the movie, stick with it as the 2nd half of the movie is pretty nuts.

The CGI hasn't held up for sure as the underwater alien scenes look terrible. The cast was actually really good and there's some good scenes in isolation but yeah the script wasn't great and it's a shame because it could have been a really good Alien movie.

Alien 4 was a big swing and miss but at least it tried. I actually really like Alien 3 (not a fan of how they handled Newt at all tho).
If you're looking for a good sequel to a sci Fi horror film I suggest Predator 2, criminally underrated.

Jean-Pierre Jeunet re-used a lot of the same cast and shots from his previous film, the City of Lost Children. His style would have actually been the perfect fit for Aliens 3.
But yes, the script was awful. To be fair, this movie was made in a time when audiences went to see films specifically for CGI effects. So the swimming aliens was a big sell and likely cost the studio a lot. Resurrection was also the beginning of the horrible man-made "hybrid" trend, which has plagued the franchise and the Predator franchise since.

I thought the swimming Aliens actually looked pretty good for the most part. Nothing about the special effects really bumped me. There was just a lot of corniness from the dialogue to the overall style. The Aliens were very slow when convenient for some reason. Like, this thing can't climb a ladder faster than someone carrying another person on their back? They were swimming like sharks but could barely catch the people. And baffling character decisions like not shooting the dude with the alien in the head immediately. What the F is Ripley's character even doing? She's with the Aliens, but also wants to kill them? Was that supposed to be GOOD basketball? Pearlman is menace man one second and horny wierdo Paxton wannabe the next. They don't want to bring it to earth but theyre going to crash it there? Did she f*** that alien? And if so, why is the alien pregnant? WTF even is this?
Yeah, it's bad.
