Zary is going to have to put up at the least 60 points to get a 7x7.

If Zary pots 50-60 pts and is playing centre this year, 7x7 is pretty reasonable.
Guy put up 34 points in 63 games as a rookie.
Monahan put up 34 in 75, yes he was younger but he was also a rookie getting his first taste just like Zary. Add in cap escalation, 7x7 if Zary pops off for 60 pts over 80 games? 100% reasonable.

That’s a big if.
We can’t just go throwing out big contracts. I know everyone is scarred by the Tkachuk and Johnny stuff but not every American wants out and not every RFA will have a axe to grind if you deal fairly with them.
For a long time they had that stupid Gio cap and the organization finally realized you can’t operate like that.
Restricted free agency is in the CBA for a reason and you need to use the tool to get the best deal possible.

That's not that big of an "if". In his rookie season, he played at a 44 point pace.
Do you think Zary will be a better player this year? I think it's likely - and I think he'll also get a shot at centre. Can he produce 15-25% more points? Monahan damn near doubled his production from NHL Y1 to NHL Y2...

I think he’s going to be a good player for us, good enough that we have to pay him 7x7 I hope.
I’m just saying don’t lock him up to a 7x7 because of past incidents and potential he may have if he doesn’t play up to a contract like that.

This is as bad an idea as when Pat Steinberg wanted to sign Dube to a 6×6 deal before everything came out about the junior team.

Not sure what the number is but Conroy just gave a guy who had 59 points and 30 points the year before a 5 year deal at 5.75 million so he has shown the ability to roll the dice on young guys improving.

A player who had 31 goals, trended upwards during the season and was one year from UFA. And 4 years older.
Big difference.

Not really, a scenario where Zary gets over 50 points and it is pretty damn similar. Not sure why an older player should get more term than a younger player. I like the Sharangovich signing, he is the right age to give term to, you are buying the years until he is 32. But there is no real reason to bridge quality young players, more often than not they will out produce their contract value.

NYR refuses to budge on the steep price of Kakko apparently.
CGY not willing to give up a 1st for a reclamation project given how high it likely is.
Expect the flames to start camp with what we have, doesn’t sound like Craig wants to bloat team with a bunch of PTO’s as a “show me” sign to the young guys to come in hungry and earn your spot.

Scoring Winger
|
Longish contracts for semi proven players are pretty risky, but it's one of the best ways a team can "weaponize" their cap space during rebuilding years if they can identify their top talent early.
7X7 for Zary doesn't really make sense as 50-60 points seems to be his ceiling right now, but a $5ishX7 is reasonable if the guy scores at around a 40 point pace again this year.
Coronato could be another guy to get a contract like that. Maybe Kevin Bahl if he looks good with the Flames.
If Wolf comes out of the gate and plays well enough, maybe they extend him longer term next off season at a $5X8.
It's all managing risk, but if they can get a few guys locked up paying bigger in the front end, but team friendly deals in the back few years, it'll really help them as they're coming out of the rebuild.

Pat's was a bad idea because he was saying to do it before the season even started and Dube hadn't proven anything.
If Zary goes 34 in 63 (44 points per 82) and then 60 in 82 this year then trying to lock him up long term could be a smart decision.

Yeah, I think he is ripe for a sophomore slump. If he progresses next season that would be huge.

I’m not even sure it would be a slump if his points drop, assuming he is playing centre. A lot more responsibilities defensively etc could lead to a point drop while he learns C at the NHL level
