I'm not sure about bandwidth, but Google has 6 of the top 10 domains visited (probably due largely to Google Adsense)

Probably time to upgrade a bit.
My choices are fairly limited as I live behind a hill, out of site of those towers, and Telus tells me they can't put me on an upgraded phone line.
So, it comes down to satellite access, including the costs associated with getting a dish and what not put on the house OR, brainwave, cellular access.
So, my question to the brilliant minds of Calgarypuck is: "Can I use my cellphone number to get better internet access on my home computer in the country."
I rarely use my cell phone anyway.
Comments?
I've heard satellite is okay until the network gets full and then the company has to lower everyone's speed.

Check out these guys. I live in the country as well, and outside of the odd outage....they have been good.
Problem with satellite internet is that they restrict your bandwith by the hour. Exceed their limit, and you're shut off for a while. I tired using it for 2 years, and it was a big waste of money.

Anyone know of a good way to use a computer to replace a phone-line fax? I already have a good fax machine and want to keep using it but wonder if there is some way to use a computer so the extra phone line isn't necessary. I'd prefer to just use the line for phone only.

If this has been adressed earlier in this thread, im sorry, but i dont have time to read 50 pages of tech support.so moving on to my problem.....
I am trying to download the season finale of Heroes using limewire, limewire is connecting to the internet, Finding people to download off of but always ends up saying 'need more sources'. For some reason it is stuck behind my firewall(norton) and cant for the life of me figure out why. Everything in the firewall settings has limewire as an aproved souce to let access the net, yet no luck. i checked the default firewall that came with the OS and it is off. from my knowledge there is no other firewall to get around. i have even turned off my norton firewall to try and get around it that way, but limewire still thinks it is blocked by a firewall. Ive deleted limewire all togather and reinstalled it and syill nothing.
any ideas of what might be my problem??
I dont know a ton about computers so i might be missing something basic, but i have tried for 2 hours to get limewire going again and cant figure it out.
Thanks in advance

Your choices are between getting someone else to host your fax service and doing it yourself with VOIP. However, VoIP isn't all that reliable as a fax service and you can end up with lost connections, messed up pages, etc. In addition there is a problem in terms of doing it yourself in the amount of technical knowledge you need to have in order to do it -- my guess is that if you could you wouldn't need help. What I would suggest is either that telus internet fax or find another provider -- most will run you around 10$. If you want to do it yourself, look here for the really technical version: http://www.voip-info.org/wiki-Asterisk+fax
Trixbox is probably the easiest to configure and it does support fax out of the box.

Is anyone here a Flash expert?
I've been asked to update the website for an online journal, and much of the web content is done in Flash. So I downloaded Flash, only to find that the content was in the .swf format--which I guess is some format that you export out of Flash, but can't be edited in Flash.
I'm normally a Dreamweaver guy--so this is all very mysterious to me. Is there a way to turn a .swf back into a .fla so I can change the content? This is worth some money to me, so any help is much appreciated. PM is fine, if you'd rather reply there.

From Wiki:

The Flash program produces SWF files as a compressed and uneditable final product, whereas it uses the .fla format for its editable working files.
|
So it looks like you are going to need to get the origional .fla file.
Here are a few links in google. Looks like some are pay products, but you might be able to get a free or trial:

I did have a friend that used a reverse compiler to go from SWF to FLA, and while it did enough that he could do what he needed, it wasn't pretty and some things just didn't work. It was a pretty simple site so he said he could have almost re-created it from scratch given the amount of work it was. But he was pretty good with Flash.

Yeah, I figured that out after I replied. Thanks again.
Photon--thanks for the caveat. Unfortunately, this is one of those sites that's a little overdesigned, so I don't anticipate it being very simple. But I don't have a lot of choices at this point, so I'm just going to move forward and try one of the .swf converters. I can't be any worse off than I am now--though I guess I could be out the time spent working on it....

Press the search button up top and type in spyware and check off 'show posts'. Good reading and I don't think there is one answer.
I use shawsecure as it's free for me but you probably don't use Shaw.

I like Windows Defender from Microsoft actually, they went out and bought a good one and built off that one.
I usually use that one and then AdAware and sometimes SpyBot. Usually two is a good idea.
And use Firefox as a browser

Hey cool!
I didn't know you could do that.
I do use Firefox...IE sucks...especially IE7. Nothing but problems when I had it on my computer.
