I think it's more that it frees up ice time an Winsport. You're right the community wont get to use that ice surface much in during the season, but at least it's one fewer tenant in other rinks.
I dunno, I've seen the Oilers practice at WEM, so there's probably going to be available time for the public.

I wonder how much it would cost for two live 4k webcams to watch the construction(inside and out)
It was cool checking in on the UBS Arena go from a parking lot at Belmont Park to a wonderful arena.
Edit: found a time lapse of it.
I've seen these on much lower profile projects, I'd say 100% chance there will be cams on this jobsite, the real question is just how publicly accessible the feeds will be. I'd also it's exceedingly likely a timelapse like this will be posted here after the fact.

Yes of course as I would assume insurance companies would demand it for safety, theft etc. but I wonder what the cost would be for the bandwidth to have it publicly accessible.
I actually think if you dont like the arena deal you should drop season tickets.
I will be. Maybe give it one year in the new arena and sell some of the games to make the cost reasonable, but this will price me out after having had tickets since being a university student after "Save the Flames" 24 years ago.
The oilers and oil kings both practice there. It’s just a practice facility billed as a community arena. I’m sure the one here will be no different with very limited benefits to the actual community.
I've played beer league at Rogers' practice rink a couple of times. "Lucky" for us the pros don't put too much stock into those 10:30pm ice times
I just wanted to stop by and say congrats guys! I don't know anything about the politics of it - hope the city isn't paying for the whole thing, but I know the Saddledome was looking a little old and I'm sure more than just a few worried about the flames staying in calgary for the long term. All those questions are done now.
Really happy for you guys! I might have to come up and check it out some day.

Any olympic bid - especially for the winter Olympics, should be to hold 2 games.
Calgary should bid for 2038, and 2046, for example, with someone else getting 2042, and 2050.
I completely agree, and frankly, I think this is going to be the future of Major Sporting Events.
You simple HAVE to be able to use the infrastructure and then re-use it. Its why the EURO cup in soccer is so successful.
This year it was held in Germany. They already have the stadiums, the transit, the hotels etc.
Same with Olympics in Paris. They already have it all.
Sure there are extras here and there and touchups and all that but the meat and bones of whats needed are all there already as opposed to places who have to build everything from scratch.
There have to be conditions to re-use what you've got.

This is where a Calgary+Vancouver joint bid makes a lot of sense to me.
2042 is CALGARY! (and Vancouver)
2058 is VANCOUVER! (and Calgary)
Each city gets the main spotlight for one of the games, but all of the investment and infrastructure gets used repeatedly. It also expands the revenue opportunities with more capacity in each city and more prime venues used.

Never thought of this, but this is pretty smart actually. Infrastructure would still be in great shape too so the 2nd round of hosting the cities should be able to make a decent profit

The real benefactors are the athletes. Two cities with Olympic class venues and training facilities? Chef’s kiss!

I really like this idea. Gives you 2 NHL arenas to work with (maybe the not-popular countries hockey and half the figure skating in the "non-host" city)?
Sliding can be in whistler while speed skating can be in Calgary, etc. For 2x Olympic use you can justify more upgrades to facilities.

You can really tell how slow things are during summer around here... speculating on winter olympics 18 and 34 years away.
Has anyone seen anything yet for the floorplans? All that is on the city's development site is still just that one promotional document. I want to see detailed, level by level blueprints.

I think Ryan Pike posted about it on Twitter. Lots of bathrooms is what I can remember lol.
