Noticed more police. Still haven’t been checked for proof of fare yet in the last few years.

Cops yes. Clean stations, yes.

Ticket checks, so far, no.

Buying a ticket almost makes you feel like an idiot these days. I actually think transit should be free though.

Yeah, if the first portion of my trip is a train, I would keep my ticket wallet open and ready to activate - I need to activate eventually, because of a bus transfer - but I think there are valid reasons to hold off.

In fact, sort of inline with your thoughts, they should just make a ticket good for the whole day. Who knows how delayed or whatever a ride is going to be.

They already have this. It's a Day Pass, and it's $11.25 (for an adult, 8.25 for a kid), good from the time of purchase for the rest of the day.

Yeah, I know we have day passes. For a single trip, there’s variables that can affect it’s usefulness.

I haven’t really noticed anything different lately on the west leg.

It wasn’t that bad during peak hours anyway though and I haven’t ridden it in non peak hours for some time.

Yes, this is real and actually happened. This is not normal behaviour and is something I have to believe the vast majority of human beings around the world would not be able to actually do to another person.

Meanwhile in Calgary, the new security measures are a bit unorthodox but it seems to be working. From r/Calgary.

Spoiler!

Random stabbing murder of mother and child in Edmonton. Could have been even worse.

https://globalnews.ca/news/9682559/p...monton-friday/

A man suspected of randomly stabbing a woman and her child to death outside a southeast Edmonton school has mental health issues and was charged multiple times over the last decade with assaulting minors, said Edmonton Police Service Chief Dale McFee.

McFee confirmed the suspect was known to police. He did not say if the suspect has been charged and did not name him on Monday, but noted the man was charged in 2009 with assault with a weapon and robbery.

McFee also said the suspect was involved in a random assault on a 12-year-old last year. McFee said the suspect has been in and out of jail on various charges.

The most recent incident with the police happened last month when the man was accused of assaulting someone with a scooter. Following that incident, he was brought before a judge and released with conditions. The charges were later dismissed.

“This is becoming far too common. There were multiple intervention points, multiple opportunities to hold the suspect accountable and provide him (with) the professional support required to manage his behaviour.

Police allege the suspect had earlier attempted to enter the school but was prevented from doing so.

“We give full credit to the school administration for following protocols,” said McFee.

EPS also stated they will be investigating the suspect for other unsolved crimes in Mill Woods.

How does a judge see this and continue to practice after they let him go?
They should be charged as accomplisses.

Apparently the criminal code has key words that really tie a judges hands as far as what sentence they can hand out.

I understand the use of random in the story but there's nothing random about the behavior of the perpetrator given his history of armed robbery, assault, and in and out of jail. That seems like normal behaviour for that individual and while I know it's easier said than done, we simply need to do a better job at diagnosing and rehabilitating troubled people like this as it's unacceptable that a women and her child lost their lives to someone that the system failed.

Officials say the suspect boarded a CTrain at the Martindale LRT station around 1 p.m. Tuesday, and took out a hatchet.

The individual then allegedly became very aggressive towards passengers, waving the hatchet and uttering threats.

Police say no one on the train was injured, but the window separating the driver from the passengers was broken.

The incident occurred less than a week after Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondek touted improved safety aboard public transit.

See, I'm not sure any reasonable level of C-Train security stops that from happening. Unless you're going to have armed police on each train car at all times.

Random psychopaths are less preventable than some of the just... pervasive sketchiness that's plagued the transit system for the past few years especially.
