As I said before, the player who’s team didn’t want him and the team who’s player didn’t want them found each other.

Huberdeau with a chip on his shoulder, and a step needed into growing from comfortable Florida kid into a man. He may take a step back in points but I see this guy as wanting to lead and do whatever it takes to make this team win.

But why were they shooting that promo with Huberdeau in Las Vegas, or was that from the league?

He is stepping into the franchise player role smoothly and with confidence. I can really envision him being named captain at some point in this season. I love to hear the team talk about how good they know they are and you can see they have a chip on their shoulder. We have seen this team disappoint us many times when expectations are high but I have a different feeling about this group.

“As much as I love Montreal, I dunno. I think it’s a tough city for a French-Canadian. Calgary traded for me. If Montreal wanted to trade for me, they would’ve traded for me. That’s how I see it. And I want to play for a team that wants me. Calgary wanted me, so that’s why I wanted to sign a big extension.”

...

On Thursday at the Players Media Tour outside Las Vegas, Huberdeau took to the ice in a crisp Flames sweater and his new number, 10, for the first time.

He loved the red.

Now, Huberdeau is hoping MacKenzie Weegar, the other Panther featured in the trade, also signs long-term with Calgary.

“I believe in this team,” Huberdeau said.

It's Official.

Huberdeau's contract ranked the worst in the NHL.
  1. Jonathan Huberdeau
  2. Chandler Stephenson
  3. Tom Wilson
  4. Colton Parayko
  5. Damon Severson
  6. Mark Scheifele
  7. Sean Couturier
  8. Seth Jones
  9. Darnell Nurse
  10. Tyler Seguin

Honorable Mentions: Pierre-Luc Dubois, Marc-Edouard Vlasic, John Gibson, Josh Anderson, Brendan Gallagher

Considering they have Darnell Nurse at 9 I am not putting much stock in this article.

At least Huberdeau was good at one point and can potentially be good. Nurse was never close to being not no good.

#9 is a joke.

Would be interesting to rank on the basis of how problematic it is for the team.
I would argue Darnell's contract is a bigger problem for the Oilers, who are trying to win now, than Huberdeau's contract for the Flames who have gobs of cap space.

The area which Huberdeau's contract is really bad is that it is essentially buyout proof until the last year of the deal based upon the massive bonus structure. Right now he just helps the Flames make it over the salary floor. Nurse's contract will limit the Oilers ability to do anything or sign their big names. So yeah that one is arguably much worse.

Edit: Nurse being at 9 is great when you consider his salary

That's not an argument, it's a fact. Now that we've actually bit the bullet cap hits really don't matter until about five years into the future.

Darnell nurses contract is much worse. At least huberdeau is a winger and not on the ice for 30 minutes a night.

Does Stephenson really deserve to be No.2?

Default Flames sign Huberdeau to long term extension (8 yrs, $10.5 mil AAV)

Call me crazy but I think he has a bounce back year. Not 114 points, mind you, but close to a PPG. Rebuilding team, low expectations, good attitude & with loads of cap space, who cares his AAV right now. Rather Huby and his contract than Nurse and his. His contract is far from a death sentence. Do you think Florida has been happy with Bobrovsky’s entire contract at 10.0M AAV with a NMC?

2019/20: 3.23 GAA / .900 Sv% (1st year in FLA)
2020/21: Lost starter role
2022/23: 3.07 GAA / .901 Sv%

Dude just backstopped his team to a cup. Huby can easily be a contributor when the team is good again, especially if Conny can expedite the rebuild somewhat.

It's a shame Pelletier looks all but done as a prospect because his development could've been a way for Huberdeau to actually contribute something to this club.

I've been having a lot of fun reading some misguided takes in the first 20 pages.

Hindsight, of course, but yeah glad I didn't wade in with a hot take of my own.
