Yup. It's not a safe place for them to live.

I dont disagree with the decampment per se, I disagree with the dumbness of it.

Its not safe for the people in that neighbourhood so clearing them out is great and necessary but....whats the plan? Where are these people going to go? Are you arresting them? Are you housing them? Putting them into a facility? Releasing them into the woods?

Whats the plan?

Yeah, those are problems and questions that need to be answered. According to the City, they are offering shelter to people they encounter and of the 36 people offered spots in shelters, only 8 people accepted. Most of the people simply fled and vowed to return to the neighbourhood after enforcement dies down. Most of them seem to prefer to squat than to live in a shelter. What do you do in this case? There are laws against it, but there are also human rights issues at play. I don't see a simple solution.

In Vancouver, there are up to 20,000 people that already use shelters and there are not always spaces available either. In this particular case, they said everyone affected by the decampment will be offered room in a shelter, but they can't force them to accept.

Women in DTES experiencing 'horrendous' levels of violence

A recent survey conducted by Atira Women’s Resource Society analyzed the experiences of unhoused women living near Hastings and Main streets. Staff gathered 50 responses between November 2022 and January 2023. According to the results, 100 per cent of women indicated they do not feel safe and that they were subjected to violence, including sexual assaults.

“One hundred per cent of the folks that we see have experienced some form of sexualized violence or intimate partner violence,” she said. “It includes clients, potential clients, predatory men who come to neighborhoods on the Downtown Eastside—because they know they can get away with it.”

Statistically, I imagine a higher than average proportion of the people experiencing that in the DTES are in that situation as a result of some childhood/youth experience of similar kinds of violence and abuse too. A truly vicious cycle.

The problem with the tents is they arent safer than the hotels and they also attract a larger amount of homeless into the DTES than might be there otherwise, as ####ty as the removal process will be for all concerned I think it is probably better for the people living there

Am I the only one who absolutely loathes the use of the term 'folks' especially in a 'professional' article?

It seems demeaning and dismissive.

These arent 'folks' they're people.

Sorry, is "folks" a bad or demeaning term? It's an honest question, because I don't see an issue with the word...

I just mean that within the context of a professional article about a serious topic it seems inappropriate.

Anyways, that might have just needed to go in the WRGMG thread.

It just seems diminishing.

It just sounds like the same language style of “y’all”. More unsophisticated than demeaning.

Do you and Locke raise your monocle before addressing your fellow highfalutin meeting attendees or after?

I would never allow my eye be unmonocled in public. We’re not savages.

This is heart breaking. I can't even imagine the pain the mother feels. Apparently, the poor kid texted momma while on the bus saying he was scared, and she went to wait for him at one of the next stops, as any mother would do, to comfort her son.
