I knew things were only going to get worse when Merryweather came in.

Speaking of throwing hard, I'm always so surprised that guys can hit a 98 mph fastball from Merryweather so well. Must be one of those guys that you can "see well" out of the hand.

The bullpen has been so good this year but it stings to see them struggle tonight. The Jays still have 2 more at bats though.

Just noticed Tapia has a lower On Base % then Batting average since he was thrown out at 2nd once and doesn’t have any walks , etc
Don’t see that very often this far into the season. Also pretty embarrassing

Team has a nice record so far to start, but it feels like they are hanging by a thread mostly to this point.
The offense really needs to wake up now. Hopefully Teo is back soon, and Kirk/Biggio remember how to hit.

Being thrown out at second still counts as a hit and does not count against his OBP, it's just a single.
His OBP is lower then his batting average because the ratio of BB + HBP / sac flies + BB + HBP is less then his batting average.
In his case he has 1 sac fly and no walks or HBP so .000 (0/1) vs .220 BA
BA 13/59 - .220
OBP 13/60 - .217
Theres actually 10 players in the MLB including Tapia who have lower OBP then BA because of this, basically you need to have no walks but at least 1 sac fly.
Christian Arroyo
Luis Campusano
Mauricio Dubón
Luis González
Odúbel Herrera
Francisco Mejía
Mike Moustakas
Tomás Nido
Connor Wong
and Jonathan Araúz would be part of the group if his BA wasn't .000 as well.
Tapia does have the most ABs of the group though.

A simple thanks would not be enough for explaining that
I have watched baseball for 30 years and never knew that was exactly how OBP was calculated. Just assumed while getting thrown out at 2nd counts as a single it wouldn’t count as “on base “
Much appreciated!

That lineup is awful. Sure hope that Guerrero is just taking today off to take the pressure off of his foot.
We need Teo back too.

Looks like another wide strike zone today.

Why are we batting a player with a .500 OPS cleanup … Seriously Montoya i don’t care that he hits left. He can’t hit water falling out of a boat

He is a project player with tons of upside. And he is potentially key to the lineup. Also, he has been hitting pretty well lately. Putting him in the #4 spot might be a boost to his confidence.
Sometimes you just play a hunch.

lol, maybe the strike zone isn't as wide as it started. That was a pretty bad call in favor of Chapman.

He hasn’t been playing well lately. He 3/20 with a double and 2 double plays in the last 5 games
His best AB was hitting a shallow fly ball. Yes he battled to get a sac fly but let not act like it was a 2 run double or something to win the game
He is hitting .210 with a lower OBP
He literally is close to the worst hitter in MLB.

Tapia could have seriously effed up his ankle if he had rolled over on that foot stuck in the fence

Ya I think the Jays just really want to spread out the lefties in the line up as much as possible as well. He has historically had very good contact rates with guys like Gurriel, Bichette and Springer up before him you can see where their philosophy is. I would love to see Espinal a little higher in the order but then you sacrifice the length in the order. Right now really though no one is really tearing the cover off the ball in this Jays line up.

What is your discussion / counter that he ISN'T close to the worst hitter in MLB? (Other then the always impressive LOL rebuttal)
Of the 174 qualified batters this season, Tapia ranks:
151 in OPS ( https://www.mlb.com/stats/?page=7)
You don't think this puts him in contention for "Close to worst hitter in the league"? And we have him cleanup
For fun - Siemen is ranked 168 in OPS, Dalbec 163rd, and Bradley 158th
So amazingly Tapia is only the third worst hitter in this game.

Calling a player the worst in baseball, based on a single stat, and 16 games, is laughable. His career OPS is 200 pts higher
