I'm just glad it is all over. Now back to hating the Ducks and Oilers together.
Will all of the fairweather fans that implored all to support the Oilers now switch allegiances to Ottawa?

What was it, something like 64-28 shots for the Ducks in the OT comeback? They earned and deserved the win, whether or not the refs helped them.
Riding inhuman endurance of a goaltender to a close series doesn't equate to being the deserving / "better" team.
Insane season from Talbot. Most tenders can't stay that sharp with that much of a workload. If he can't replicate it next season then a lot of warts will come to light next year.
|
I guess Milan was mouthing off to the media that there shouldn't have been a 7th game and it should have ended in 6.

In the words of Fred Sanford "You big dummy". I hope the Oilers think that it was the reffing that did them in, and not the fact that outside of the 1st and 6th game they were pretty much outclassed by the ducks in every aspect of the game except for goaltending. And to give credit where its due, Talbot is the Oilers MVP not McDavid.
We saw McDavid fade out and vanish in the playoffs. He was lazy without the puck. He's got the physical game of a sponge, his defensive play was atrocious, and when he didn't get his lane to wind up, he was dust.
Just to prove it, here's a picture of Lucic, Eberle, RNH and McDavid taking a shift together
Frankly, its going to be tough for the Oilers. We know that Draisaitl is going to get paid, he might not get a offer sheet (But he could) but he's probably going to get on the far side of $7 million bucks. First because its Chia negotiating, and 2nd because the NHLPA is pissed at the NHL right now and there's going to be no free lunches.
Besides Draisaitl's contract, they right now have 10 forwards and 5 defensemen under contract. What's the Kassian deal going to look like? He's on a cheap deal now, but lets say that he gets $2.5 million and Draisaitl gets 7.5 million. There's 10 million bucks, at the same time, Russell is looking for a deal and he was oh so heroic last night, and according to Sports net a certified genius and a bonified stud.
They're going to have to replace that and either resign him at probably 4.5 million to get him to stay or look for someone that can play on that second pairing, because honey, Nurse is not that guy, A top 4 of Sekeras, Larrsson Klefbom and probably Benning isn't that great of a top 4, unless you have Talbot in net for 75 games a year.
so right now, the oilers have 15 million in cap space for next year.
You resign Draisaitl at 7.5 Kassian at 2.5, Russell or an equivalent at 4 and bring in JP and pray he's read at about a mil. So now your at the cap. but you have no depth and you have a 10 million dollar cap hit for McDavid coming up the year after as well, as Maroon, Nurse and Benning, who could add up to another 8 or 9 million (Maroon 4 or his replacement, Nurse 2.5 and Benning 2.5)
We'll just dump RNH and Ebs and Luch.
Yeah, in a cap world nobody is taking full hits for those guys period, if you want to move them be prepared to either eat salary or take back a slightly less noxious contract.
You see, as much as Sporstnet crows about them building something special.
The flawed bad drafting in later rounds, the insistence on drafting players with cool youtube videos, bad contacts, bad development and the addiction to high lottery picks has created a perfect storm of a short window followed by suck.
At the same time, the season of soft schedule, god like Talbot goaltending, no serious injuries and other luck factors won't last forever.
And while other teams are out signing free agents and improving their team, Chia will be standing there like a sad orphan dissembling the team that made a heroic one round victory that captured a nations imagination (not)
So in conclusion, after watching the Sportsnet crew sucking up to the Oilers and hyping things like Shoulder bumps and leadership phrases like "Lets Go", and not like "Lets Go you apes, do you want to live forever?!?" but "Lets go (I have to pee". And hearing hypocritical Oiler fans whining about officiating and league wide conspiracies to screw them, after chiding us for that behaviour I can only conclude with this one statement.
Hey Oiler's and Oiler fans you have something on your face.

The Ducks are not very good, which is the reason this series went the distance in the first place. I will be surprised to see the Predators require more than six games to dispatch them.

Can we move the Ducks to the eastern conference and bring the Wings back to the west? The Ducks are the reason we don't get a BoA in the playoffs. Curse them.

The Curse™ won't last forever. It really looked like the Flames would break through in Anaheim this year. I am pretty confident that it will happen next season.
The Ducks are in the WCF because of a favourable matchup against the Oilers. I think this is likely to be Getzlaf's and Perry's last opportunity, and it doesn't look good from here on to the Finals with a much tougher opponent in Nashville waiting for them.

Is Nurse really that bad? For someone who has all the 'tools' he sure didn't show much.
Oilers have some terrible contracts to get out of.

Nurse was lost, seems that his game revolves around toughness only, nothing else there right now.
McJesus with only 3 even strength points in 13 games. Not good enough either. Take away the empty netter and the 2 points on 5 on 3 PPs and his playoffs look quite poor.
Talbot was the real star.

I keep checking to see what lame post that Stang guy is going to put up. I saw he was in this thread earlier but he didn't post. Obviously coming up with a good inspired post, hoping it goes something like this:
"Too bad its over but I'm so proud of the Oilers, I just wanted some meaningful games down the stretch and they gave me so much more. I crawled into bed after the game last night with my bright orange 97 McLovin jersey and held myself tight, stroking the magical number 97 on my arms, knowing that the Edmonton Oilers are the bestest team in our hearts and in the NHL. It really isn't even close."
"I will hold my head high with visions of all the Stanley Cups that Connor McDavid will bring to the world class city of Edmonton in the future. Once they correct the thoughtless decision of taking down the "City of Champions" sign as you drive into the majestic city of Edmonton and put that bastion of truth back up, things will obviously be different."
"Next year the Oilers will be so much better, as you must lose in order to win. These guys have learned what is needed to win the Cup and will work on it all summer."
"McDavid will be 25% less awkward, Lucic will be so much faster, Nurse will gain seven IQ points, The Tenderness will put on thirty pounds of muscle and constantly test his skin with butter knives.
Kassian will get fused with an adamantium skeleton complete with Wolverine claws to match his horribad beard, Maroon will be 18 to 20% less of a Maroon.
Eberle plans to give back 4.5M of his contract annually to the Oilers Cap, Pouliot is going to change his name to Gouliot to lose that feces reference and Talbot will attempt to grow a third arm."
"It has only taken ten plus years to build something special, but this is 100% more special than the something special it has been in past years. The organization has shown that it has perfected the lottery and now we are so good, we don't need that anymore. We've moved on. We've adapted. We were one goal away from winning the Stanley Cup, err I mean making it to the Conference Finals and have alerted the entire league of our impending greatness, complete with bringing the Great One, McDavids magical number 97 plus two numbers equaling 99, Mr. Wayne Gretzky back into the fold."
"If it wasn't for horrible reffing, the Playoffs would already be over and Kevin Lowes wife would be eating McNuggets out of the Stanley Cup. So I will say again, I'm so proud of the Oilers. Did you see the anthems at Rogers Place?! Something special. Orange Crush. Women with bruises on their legs? Incoherent muttering. Something special..."

Nah, I kind of expect AlbertaOiler and Stang to show up around draft time under the excuse that they were too busy to be here.
And then wax poetically about the Oilers for a while. AO will use advanced stats to justify why Eberle was awesome during the playoffs. Cause that's what he does.
They'll wait for the actual memories to fade from this series that showed the Ducks pretty much pushing Edmonton's stool in while Talbot kept it close and reframe it as Oilers dominance. They'll talk about McDavids leadership because the guys at sportsnet say wo.
And then the cycle will start again as what's happened before will happen again.

It sucks but I do think the Oilers will be able to unload RNH and Eberle...and Puljujarvi will probably replace the production of one of them. It's just a question of what kind of return they will get.

The only thing the advanced stats show is just how dominant the Ducks were against the Oilers.
In a 7 game series at 5 on 5 the Oilers were:
Out shot in 6/7 games (tied the other)
Out corsi'd in 6/7 games
Out fenwicked in 6/7 games (tied the other)
Out scoring chanced in 6/7 games
Out "high danger" scoring chanced in 5/7 games (tied one of them)
There isn't a stat out there that makes the Oilers look better than the Ducks. Including the most important one, wins.

Glad the nightmare is over. Looking back I think a lot of things fell into place for the Oilers season and playoff run that may be difficult to replicate so they can keep on thinking they are at that next level. It would surprise me if they matched this seasons point totals next year.
As for the ducks, you keep waiting for them to start to slow down, but they keep chugging along. I can go back to hating them.

Yeah, he's been around for awhile and we've had our share of battles in his time here. Just poking some fun at a resident Oilers fan on this glorious Oilers occasion.

Yeah agreed.
On the same note, I'm pretty shocked Back2Back and AlbertaOiler haven't been in here posting. They usually can't get to CP fast enough after oilers losses.
Or, wait...maybe that's oilers wins?

Wait a minute, wait a minute, hang on just a sec!
What about HNIC cheerleaders? Easy win for oilers.
Robberies by referees? Oilers easily robbed more, HNIC confirmed.
References to past glories? I'm not even counting!
Sure wins, but mactavish says failure = success, Connor says "lets go" and "we'll be back", oiler intern Ron says you have to lose to win, while asking if "Leon is mark to Connor's wayne".
So sure, reality says one thing, but for the oilers, losing is winning.
