Had an idea!

Great point by Rex about how much Fort Mac and Alberta in general has helped so many Canadians over the years. The LEAST we can do is help them back.

$50 for me, not much but have to do something. Got an email from work (I'm a Peace Officer with AHS) yesterday saying they may need some of us to go help, and I volunteered. Hopefully I get the chance.
Got another email today saying they're setting up the ability to donate to the Red Cross through payroll deduction

Put us down for $500.
My wife just flew home from one of the Oilsand sites today (she works there) and she's hearing some pretty grim stories.
Hopefully the weather comes to the party and this can come to an end sooner rather than later.

Just yesterday Athabasca Oil was offering up spots in its Hangingstone oilsands camp for evacuees from Fort McMurray.
Thursday evening, the plant is itself under evacuation, as the fire is now just five kilometres away.
|
I have highlighted the Hangingstone Facility to the SW in green. The yellow line is 30km from the most recent detection, though the article says it is only 5km away. It must have moved very fast or there was a new ignition in the past few hours.
That would be horrible being evacuated to "safety" there and then having to move again...

When will people learn. We saw most of these insensitive tweets and facebook posts in this thread. An employer suspending one and donating his wages to the Red Cross. There is your karma!

So are those who can do less or the same.
The spirit of the posting donations is in no way about individual competition. It's about being proud of the running CP total.

Whaaaat that cant be right. Wow. It is right near the road, could be another fire. There were pics and/or video of people dropping cigarettes butts out of their vehicles while evacuating! Who are these people!?!

Time and time again I am amazed with the amazing collection of people here on Calgary Puck. Your generosity is truly amazing!
A little background, I was a full time firefighter with the Fort McMurray fire department for seven years. I met my wife there and made many lifelong friends. I owe a lot to the city. Reluctantly, we moved back to St John's to be close to family and seeing what happened there has been devastating to me. Many of my friends who are still with the fire department have lost everything in the fire and are still on the front lines fighting to save what is left of the city. I briefly spoke to one of them tonight and he told me that the firefighters have been working 20 hour shifts with a four hour rest period at Mac Island since Sunday night! I really can't say enough about what a tremendous amount of pride I have for these individuals and how much I wish I could be there helping them.
One funny story to relate though, back in about 2006 one of the firefighters on my platoon in fort mac who was a die hard oilers fan created an account on Calgary Puck and called himself "kipperyoursocksoff". He began posting crazy and insane trade rumours about all the flames players which all the oilers fans at the fire hall found hilarious... Subsequently CP mods banned him, blocked the ip meaning I couldn't log in at the fire hall to read the forums..... I figure he's probably earned some forgiveness!
Here are some pics he sent me of them fighting the fire last night around midnight, not sure what part of town this was.
Oh and put me down for $500

Donated 20 bucks after my rant yesterday. Not a lot, but add it to the pile.
This thread has turned into exactly what I was talking about. Regular people banding together to do whatever they can to help their fellow human beings. The outpouring of support from this lil corner of the internet brings a tear to the ol eye.

$19,821.
I have run out of words to describe my awe for this. Such an amazing thing to see.
It's also definitely not a competition. We are all in this together. Everyone, regardless of whether or not they donated, or by how much, should be proud of this.
