If you go back and look at Darryl’s teams in LA they were stacked down the middle. Kopitar-Carter-Richards-Stoll.
The Flames need another centre. Hertl is that man (unless he gets re-signed, then it becomes someone else!)

That would be great but with what capital ? His cost is going to be a 1st plus . Not to mention flames don’t have enough cap space to acquire him .

We've been operating with Lindholm/Backlund/Monahan/Ruzuicka this year and we've done quite well, so I'm not too worried about upgrading a 2C right away. That's something we can do next summer once Lucic comes off the books. In the mean time, Tre's one and only goal is to get those 3 wingers signed ASAP. All other roster decisions are basically secondary at this point.
|
Even if we manage to sign all three, it is not really a sustainable idea to keep them all long-term. I can't think of any teams (let alone successful teams) that have two wingers as their highest paid players - it could be three here if Mangi exceeds $6M AAV. Three great players, but two of them are undersized and one can't skate...it's just not a good idea to lock 25M AAV (over 30% of cap).
Ideally you sign all three, which gives a bit more flexibility in who to move and when. At least 1 big AAV reduction move will have to be made somewhat 'urgently', with another reduction move likely necessary eventually. There are a lot factors (including the upcoming playoffs) to determine which of these should happen first, and which can happen later:
A. Johnny walks
B. Move Tkachuk (or Mangi, but ideally MT for cap structure)
C. Move Monahan
D. Move Lucic
Of course there are other possibilities for how it could play out, but IMO we'll need to see at least two of the above occur in the off-season.
2/3C is a hole that needs to be filled. We can't bet on Ruzicka/Zary/Dubé to effectively fill that hole for the next 2 years - it's a bit more reasonable to hope that one can fill Backlund's skates 2 years from now.
Ideally we get a 24-27 year old with good offense to fill a middle six C. Easier said than done, and the player will almost certainly have warts, but for cheaper than Monahan and more upside. A pu pu platter of plausible options in no particular order: Copp, Roslovic, Dvorak, Wennberg, P Suter, Barbashev, Kerfoot, N Paul, Laughton, B Howden*, M Joseph*, Luostarinen*
*The last three are particularly interesting from an offersheet/trade perspective since their teams are totally capped out.

2023 1st + Zary for 50% retained should get it done. Throw a 3rd to CBJ to retain an additional 25% of the total value making the Flames cap-hit $1,406,250 which fits in just fine if the Flames waive Richardson or Ritchie, or if they send Ruzicka to the AHL.
I know it’s unlikely, but there are absolutely ways to get it done. With Darryl here, and the team performing the way it is I think this is an all-in window of opportunity.

I think Monny is great - the issue is his contract. If he were a 3m dollar player that'd be reasonable for his current role.
i'd love to get Jarnkrok for a playoff run...or if they decide to focus on D, Kulak would be a solid addition...
for a playoff run, Chara would be a great addition, but unsure what that would cost, but Calgary would be a very nasty team in the playoffs with him on board.

A 7-2 run that left them… let me see… STILL dead last in the NHL.

Even in sports, that level of delusion is pretty hard to come by.

And Brad snapped him up quickly to make sure no other team got their hands on him.

It will be very expensive to offload Monny before next years trade deadline.

The cost of not moving Monahan is catastrophic as there is no way to retain who we need to retain with him eating $6.375M.
...I also still don't see it as being all that difficult. I think someone will take Monahan. He's young enough to believe there may be a bounce back and he plays centre which is always an important spot. He only has one year left on his deal, so it's a very low risk bet.

I don't share your optimism. I think he will be extremely difficult to move, his salary, his play, his 10 team no trade list. I do hope you're right however.
The main thing I'm concerned about is seeing him in the playoffs costing us goals like we've seen all season. Its one thing being a 6.4 million player on our 4th line who does nothing, another when he is the weak link with detrimental play on a team rolling 4 lines.
He has to go. Addition by subtraction.

Monny will not be seen as a "bounce back" candidate as much as a chronically injured player. How he performs the rest of the season and the playoffs will determine how difficult it will be to move him.
If he continues as he has this year, it's a high risk bet. Better ways to risk $6.375M.

2021/2022 Trade Speculation and Rumours
Some NHL rumour rumblings from Pierre LeBrun:
“I think the Flames remain among the several teams interested in Chiarot. Remember that Calgary tried to get him in the Tyler Toffoli trade last month but couldn’t make a bigger deal work. But the Flames have continued to keep tabs on Chiarot with the obvious issue right now that I think Calgary views the current price as too high. My sense is the Habs have strong interest in Flames prospect Jakob Pelletier, the team’s 2019 first-round pick.”
