@lowetide I've mentioned this a few times, Imo Keith Gretzky is getting closer to becoming the de facto general manager of the Edmonton Oilers. Not an endorsement, but an observation based on years of watching the team do its business. IF they win (say) 10 of the last 20, I believe he's in
|
Wouldn’t be too surprised. Really can’t see ownership wanting to pay for Chia and a new GM, especially if they’re having problems renewing STHs. Cheaper to “recycle” what they have: make Keith the GM, and promote one of the assistants to coach

Man the only thing that could make things up north better would be getting to watch them go through the 7 stages of GG next season but with an edmonton flair
Boasting, Parade Planning, denial, disbelief, stick throwing, parade planning, missing the playoffs
or something like that

if that is chronological order then i think missing the playoffs needs to be much much earlier! ha!
i'm assuming the boasting and parade planning will be early october (preseason champs yet again... raise a banner!!)
denial and disbelief by early november at the latest becuz by then they will realize that the playoffs are nothing more than a pipe dream.

Agreed. It's more like:
Boasting, Parade Planning, denial, disbelief, eliminated from the playoff race, stick throwing, finger pointing, garbage bag day, parade planning,

You guys missed three key ingredients to a proper oiler season:
1. Hiring a coach and comparing him to Mike Babcock
2. Firing the coach
3. Firing another front office fall guy.

Since 2007, Jordan Eberle and Oskar Klefbom are the only players drafted higher than 10OA by the Oilers and developed by them who are still regular NHLers.
They also selected Tobias Rieder, Riley Nash, and Erik Gustafsson (now lighting it up in CHI after Edmonton failed to retain his rights), but didn't develop either of them. They might also get some credit for Brandon Davidson, but he's never played more than 51 games in an NHL season...if he comes back from injury and hangs on, Chicago would deserve credit for another reclamation project.
They did turn Riley Nash into the pick that became Martin Marincin how was traded for a pick that they used in part of a package to acquire Eric Gryba, whose buyout will remain on the Oilers books until the end of next season, so I guess that legacy lives on a bit longer. Personally, I might have stuck with the guy who has now played 459 NHL games.
Since trading Eberle, he's scored 38 goals and 87 points
With the Oilers, Strome, Spooner, and Gagner combined for: 18g and 41 pts.
They've ended up with a guy 16 months older than Eberle, who has bounced between 4 NHL and 2 AHL teams...including HALF OF THIS SEASON IN THE AHL. And they owe him 3.15M next year.
Maybe he'll garner a 6th rd pick at next year's deadline, like he did for the Lightning in 2014.
So they turned Jordan Eberle into two seasons of less than half of Eberle's production, and another year of overpaid Sam Gagner.
The same Sam Gagner who they selected 6th overall pick in 2007...developed him into an impressively one-dimensional player, who they were able to trade for 1.5 pretty good years by Teddy Purcell (who was then moved for a 3rd round pick who doesn't appear to be particularly promising (Matthew Cairns - LD at Cornell...couldn't find any news on him since 2017)
It's ever so fun to track the linkages of Oilers transactions, because they are so no good.
I'm not saying that trading Eberle a few years ago was not the right idea, but imagine what he could have returned for them at yesterday's deadline...I'm gonna go out on a limb and say it would be a lot more than Sam Gagner and negative -46 pts

Nah, but my tiny human does and she insists my computer area has them to remind me of her, cause her yelling at me at full volume about her friend's new dresses isn't reminder enough

Jesus T-effing Christ, I just realized the first half of Slap Shot is the Edmonton Oilers.
Chiarelli = Joe McGrath
McDavid = Ned Braden (Connor McDavid is now the leading scorer in the Federal League)...that's what you're paid for, McDavid, now try winning for a change.
Talbot = Trade me right ####ing now.
Hanson Bros = Manning and Petrovic (Every piece of garbage comes in the market, you gotta buy it)
Dickie Dunn = Spector (just trying to capture the spirit of the thing)
(OffSide?) Lily Braden = Lauren Pronger (I just wanna get out of this goddamn dump)

So flames are 28 points up on Edmonton. For those of you with point bets, how does it make you feel that by the end of the season it will be like an additional mortgage payment for the Oiler fan.
Oilers are really no good.

It's just wonderful how the Oilers have gone on a tiny bit of a run picking up six points in four games and moving away a bit from the very bottom, but still find themselves even further back from the wild card than when they were those four games ago.
