Some posters are livid that the Flames did nothing of significance at the trade deadline. I don't particularly mind it, because of the current position of the Flames. There are no gaping holes and the team is doing quite well. There are a good number of prospects coming up and when they do, we have enough depth that they are not needed to play higher than the bottom lines. Great development.
However, the Oilers are an entirely different story. No tradeable assets beyond draft picks. They don't even have anyone of importance on an expiring contract beyond Chiasson, who by not trading, are setting themselves up to give him (an ex-PTO) a raise this offseason.
Not only were they unable to trade anyone away for assets, they don't have anyone significant coming off the books this offseason. Reider's 2m and Petrovic's 2m will need to be off-set by UFA players coming in with essentially the same skill and at the same price if they are lucky. Khaira will be getting a raise, who the heck knows what will happen to Pulujarvi.
This team has absolutely no move that can feasibly improve their team. They were a cap team with Sekera on LTIR for most of the year and they STILL sucked. Their only hope is that Sekera returns to form, although 5m/yr form is essentially out of the question after so many years of injury.
So while the Flames didn't drastically improve their team this year, remember: they didn't have to, but they could have if they wanted to. Ultimate position of power. And the Oilers desperately needed to change something for next year, but they couldn't. Position of weakness.
