Probably the most under rated A24 horror flick in my opinion.

If you were making a Mt.Rushmore of horror directors who would you put on it? For me I'd have to go Romero, Craven, Carpenter without hesitation and the 4th is a tough choice but I'd go Cronenberg.

^ No Alfred Hitchcock? I guess his movies weren't outright "horror" in some aspects, but considering his era I would classify many of his movies as horror/suspense/mystery.

Well...it starts with Hitchcock.

Mike Flanagan is building a pretty solid case.

I'm assuming you're just considering North American directors?
Otherwise Argento and Fulci both belong.

Hitchcock probably deserves to be in there 100% for what he's brought to the genre good call on that one.
Argento is great, Suspiria is amazing he's another solid choice. I'm not as familiar with Fulci outside of Zombie.
Question is then who do you kick off?

I'm not a big 'Horror' guy, so the genre really has to sell me on some of the other elements of the story.
Slasher flick? Pass.
Flanagan is currently the top of the Class in this case at the moment.
Doctor Sleep, Midnight Mass, Hill House...just...I loved all of them, and thats coming from someone who generally has no care for the entire genre, so they were good.

Hitchcock, Argento, Fulci, Carpenter for me.
Edit: Actually maybe Cronenberg instead of Fulci. Definitely tough to limit to 4.

Flanagan and Waan are making the case to one day be up there.
I just don't know if I could take off Craven and Romero. Craven gave us Scream and Nightmare on Elm Street and Romero gave us the idea of a Zombie apocalypse.
Another name id consider is Tobe Hooper. Texas Chainsaw 1 &2 , Poltergeist and Funhouse is a strong resume.

Kurosawa, Kubrick, Hitchcock, Spielberg.
Honorable mention to Billy Wilder and Park Chan-Wook.
That's my list and I'm sticking to it.
Y'all are in the weeds with all these art house horror film directors.

Spielberg doesn't have the horror filmography to be considered whatsoever though. Jaws is a masterpiece but then he turned to big budget action/adventure and drama for the most part almost immediately. It'd be like putting Brett Hull or Grant Fuhr on the Flames Mount Rushmore because of what they did elsewhere. Madness I tell you!
Likewise the only Kurosawa that would belong on a horror list is Kiyoshi!
I just don't think you can leave off directors who spanned 3 or 4 decades of quality in the genre like Argento and Cronenberg.
The influences of the artistry in Giallo and Cronenberg-esque body horror are still present all over the place.

I dunno, I found it fairly slow for the most part, the end is just great though.
However, I will say that I felt it accurately depicted the suspension of the Ford Crown Victoria.
That thing would just heave from side to side for hours. Like it didn't have shocks. I felt that was rather accurate.

LOL, I completely read it too fast and misunderstood. I thought it was just any directors, not HORROR directors. My bad.

I'm not saying Peter Jackson deserves to be on the list but his early horror movie work was very solid and one wonders what he could achieved had he stuck with horror movies.

Phew, I thought you had gone crazy for a sec.
By the way, since you've been a good source for Korean recommendations before have you seen many of Lee Chang-Dong's? I ordered a boxset off a recommendation, The Poetry of Lee Chang-Dong.
I've seen and loved Burning and Secret Sunshine and this boxset includes his 4 others conveniently enough: Green Fish, Peppermint Candy, Oasis, and Poetry. I'm going in blind for these 4 but I've heard great things.

Strange Darling was an engaging piece of entertainment. I would recommend.
I liked how the reveals were made (jumping between chapters) even though I wasn't sure early on.
Not sure about modern cult classic but it didn't have many weaknesses for what it was and the execution was unique enough that people will remember it.

Today is Brian De Palma's birthday, he's probably in my personal Mt. Rushmore of directors. All his films are great, he has such a wonderful filmography that I'd put up against anyone, he's the master of the thriller. 100 years from now audiences will still be watching his work. Body Double, Blow Out, Phantom of the Paradise, Femme Fatale , Scarface, Carrie, Snake Eyes, Untouchables, Mission Impossible..... GOAT
