Gibbons is awful.

The Jays score 8 runs to make it a 10-9 game, have all the momentum, and Gibbons puts Josh Towers in the game. If any inning pitching wise was going to be the most important, that was it. Why not put Wolfe or Downs in there, who each only faced a couple batters the night before and would have been fine to go in.

He constantly makes decisions that hold the team back. I've f'ing had it with Gibbons.

sigh. Another day of dead bats. Stairs gets the 3 run homer and nothing else to support Doc, who threw his 7th complete game (next best in the league is 3).

Another day where the whole team except for Stairs and Halladay should be just embarrased.

I could have rounded up a group of friends myself and played about as inspired as they did.

That was great. Rance totally called VW's game winning home run tonight. Said Vernon was due for a home run and next pitch - gone.

I think the Jays will drop 2 of 3 to Tampa. Tampa just seems to have the Jays number. In fact, I think most teams that are near the bottom of the standings tend to give the Jays a tough time.

That's more perception than reality often. Mike Wilner talked about it once on the post-game show. At the time the Jays had one of the best records against bottom feeding teams, they may or may not still.

Thats interesting, the last 2 series I can remember, about a month ago or so in Tampa I believe the Jays were swept, and that series in Kansas City where the Jays either split a 4 game series or lost 3 of 4 to the Royals.

They lost 2 of 3 to Tampa, and split the 4 game set with KC.

Still pretty terrible.

Yeah, especially for a team who was suppose to really compete for a playoff spot this year.

Actually the last two series vs Tampa the D-Rays took 2 of 3. Don't forget that series where they lost 2 of 3 to Chicago too! Although they did sweep the Rangers the last time through.

Jays problem is that they themselves to my recollection have swept 3 series this year against Colorado, Texas, and Seattle. In turn they've been swept in Seattle, vs. Oakland, and likely someone else. Really it's tought to gain ground in baseball when you're trying to win every series 2-1 type of thing and splitting the 4 gamers.

Jays beat the Rays 7-2 tonight.

McGowan pitched a gem, 8 innings, 4 hits, 2 ER, and 12 strikeouts.

Of all the young pitchers the Jays have McGowan in my opinion has the best stuff by far. Tampa Bay is a good offensive club and had scored like 110 runs in the last 13 games and he held them in check pretty well. I think McGowan really has the potential to be a pretty good pitcher if he can build on this season.

Since MLB decided to not let Dish network broadcast out of market games, I have only watch one Jays game this year. You guys have been giving some great information on the team.

Good to hear McGowan is coming around. I was always worried the Jays would give up on him and trade him for a nothing.

If they didn't have all of the injuries does anyone think they could have competed for the wild card this season?

I don't know if they could have competed for the Wild Card or not. The pitching staff has probably long exceeded expectations with how they've thrown, especially in the second half here. Really the problem has been that guys like Overbay, Wells, Glaus have all badly underachieved. Even before the hand injury Overbay hadn't hit all that well and Wells has hit poorly all season and since we don't know when his shoulder was messed I can't say he'd have been much better if healthy. Had these guys been fully healthy than perhaps they could have come closer, but in head to head games with the Yankees the Jays just don't seem to have that extra oomph to win those games. Every team is going to have injuries and in the case of Overbay and Johnson's injuries Matt Stairs came in and has been the teams most productive hitter on a per AB basis. Accardo although not perfect has done a good enough job in the closers role where you could argue the team might have had what one extra save with Ryan had he been healthy?

At least the team can likely go into the offseason knowing that Markum, McGowan, Halladay, Burnett, Litsch can be the starting 5 and Chacin might still be able to hold down a spot too depending on how bad his shoulder is. So long as Downs, Wolfe, Accardo, and Janssen are all back and the team still has Frasor's rights they might be able to move one of those relievers.

If the offense played like they did last year, and the pitching the way they have this year, they would've won the division and would be one of the favorites for the WS. Unfortunately the hitters suck when the pitching is great, and the pitchers suck when the hitting's great.

Hasn't that been the story of the Blue Jays for about 10 years now...since back in the Clemens/Hentgen days?

Pretty much and in a lot of cases it applies to every team at some point where one year they'll get good pitching and the next year they'll have a good offence. In the end...you're supposed to have both at the same time to actually have any success you can make a legitimate claim to. And the Blue Jays can't really claim any type of success since 1993.
