We can disagree. McCabe is a solid #3 on any team. Reilly is very debatable. He didn't contribute much, I agree, and foot speed costs him every now and then badly. So I get it. But it's the mix overall that's the problem. There are too many skilled guys who go around guys and not through them and that's been an issue for a long time. It's great in regular season but they never get out of their comfort zone to do much to get a scrappy goal. So that venn diagram where you need skilled guys to get dirty and take the puck to the net, just isn't there. Marner is the answer for what you should be dealing (and I think he'll relent but it has to be a team he'll want to go to). You need a proper mix of speed, skill and determination. Too many of their guys are skilled but refuse to get dirty. They can't give up on skill. They just need a different mix of skill, speed and more determination to get dirty. The dirty part is missing with Marner. Tavares will go down the middle here and there and can be clutch. He isn't too bad. Marner really is the answer for what you have to drop.
McCabe would not be a number three on any of the 8 teams still in the playoffs. Of the teams eliminated he would have a hard time being a number three on any of them outside the Capitals. Benoit probably does not play on many of the teams still playing.

Yeah, McCabe wouldn't be a #3 on Calgary at the beginning of the season. Or #4.

That doesn't work because you're not accounting for the fact that they were well over the cap this season and used over $14 million in LTIR to remain compliant. It also doesn't account for the raises on new contracts some players have already signed for next season, Matthews and Nylander especially.
Also, you don't need to go through all that work anyway if you're already on CapFriendly. Just scroll down to the Roster and Cap Hit Statistics sections. It shows that the Leafs currently have 16 roster players signed for next season, with a combined projected cap hit just over $69 million. Which gives about $18.5 million in cap space on a projected $87.7 million cap.
Thanks. Didn’t realize they have that info at the finger tips.
Anyway, I truly don’t think the Leafs are in a bad position as some make them out to be on here. There’s a level of uncertainty for sure but they have a couple minor leaguers who may be brought up next year as well (Minten and Cowan). It’s really a question of getting the right mix of skill and grit without having to force grit through unskilled signings like Reeves. Again, I’m not a Leafs fan, but do recognize you have to get the mix right. It’s now apparent and the possibilities have been exhausted they have the skill up front. They’re just too one dimensional which works for the regular season and not for the playoffs. Time to tradeoff some skill for some more sandpaper and they’ll be fine. I do worry about Treliving trying to outsmart everyone with a dumb signing. That would f them up badly.
It’s never Treliving’s fault. With the Flames, it’s the owner, now it’s Shanahan
His solution for the Leafs were Klinberg and whatever spared dmen.
Never addressed their obvious goaltending issue
The guy is truly a wizard for avoiding blames
Well he did kind of just get there. As much as I want him to fail for how he left the Flames in shambles, that's not really his team yet since that takes time with a new GM.
I don’t like the leafs at all but as a goalie it’s making me legitimately angry that Samsonov just let that puck float 6 feet in front of him. Could have easily poke checked it before Pasta even gets it.

Was out with friends watching the game and wow what a roller coaster in the 3rd. I felt pretty good after Nylander's goal but funny enough, my friends were still nervous as hell, expecting the worst, along with most of the other people in the bar. I guess this is what happens when your team seemingly chokes every time in the big games or maybe you'll just naturally feel nervous if it's your team (I'd also be nervous if the Flames were in that situation in game 7).
Agree that Samsonov could have gone out on that rebound, but boy, that was almost perfectly placed.
