So what's the 2nd best ranked video game adaptation to date?
Sonic, which is kind of ridiculous. But it was made by people who loved the game and also knew how to write a fun story, which seem to be an impossible feat for most other game adaptations. I'm hoping the Mario movie can be at least as good as that one

I assume it's better if you are already invested in the story , which the game obviously does. I feel like the series has spent significant time developing the relationship between the main characters, but have failed to make me care about them. I do not like Joel or Ellie. I don't dislike them. I don't care about them - not really interested in them. I had to google cast just now because I couldn't remember Ellie's name. I think I'd care if I had been invested through the game.

I think that's a fair criticism, Eldrick. You spend a lot of time "getting to know" Ellie and Joel in the video game just by virtue of the trudge through the post-apocalyptic world. There are lots of little scripted gameplay moments and bits of dialogue between the two that the show has borrowed from, but also some they've completely ignored. In particular Episode 3 of the TV series, with Bill and Frank, is completely different in the game, with Joel and Ellie spending much, much more time in Bill's town.
I don't think playing the game would have a huge impact... I think its more the level of fandom (or perhaps type of fandom is better). Almost everything now a days has super fans who seem to derive zero joy from the thing they spend so much time on. See the Fire on Ice forum for an example. They just want to complain about whatever mistakes they see.

I still wiash it was something like 12 episodes instead of 9. Would give them more time to fill in blanks, flesah out characters and so on ... but as a huge fan of the games, I'm probably just greedy lol.
Yeah, 12 episodes would be better. I think with 12 you could even end the season with the beginning of the 2nd game.
Given the high quality, amazing acting, great story, etc. it would have been awesome to have more episodes certainly.
With their well thought out adaptation, I kinda trust them to do what they think is right here.
They've been on the record for basically combining what would have been the first two episodes into one (feedback was they didn't want to end the first episode on the gut punch of having lost Sarah). And Craig Mazin had a 2+ hour version of episode 3. So I would be really curious to pick up a blu-ray release of this if they added all the cut stuff back in down the road.
Especially if the BTS stuff had more of their experience in Calgary and Alberta.
EDIT: Speaking of a Calgary and Alberta call out

Someone please find Joel someone to love that man has an endless chasm in his soul. I cried for him. Not sure I've ever felt more for a character in anything.
On locations, could be wrong but I think we're seeing mix/match going on for example foreground and backdrop blended from different areas which confuses my brain.

There have definitely been composite shots, like the house in Canmore, and they had one showing Rundle and Ha Ling in the background, with a prairie hill in the foreground. Most of the city stuff seemed to be composites as well.
