Doesn't depth usually just mean AHL with Treliving?

Hopefully one of the signings is Ritchie.

Deal for Tarasenko or sign Saad, please.
Need more punch up front if you're "going for it" with Sutter. Which for us means a second round appearance.

You can debate if teams would be better served by sitting out UFA season but the fact is if you are going to play in that market that's what you pay. So how is it an overspend?
|
Because it's 6 years and goes until he's almost 36.
You don't think the term is too long for his age?

Shorter term = higher AAV. How much more were you willing to pay?

That is true.
His "big fish" are middle sixers.
Even Lindholm was that at the time he acquired him.

Probably not more than 5.5 x 3 years
I doubt he'd do that, so I probably wouldn't have signed him at all.
I would rather have given Pius Suter a 5 mill x 2 year (and that's way above what he signed for).

I believe the main issue is the term for a player nearly 30 years old. The same deal for half the term is less egregious.

Brad did have a comment along the lines of see if the trade market bears fruit. Fruit must be Eichel right?
RIGHT?

Of course it is.
As is the case with ALL these UFAs.
Which means it's not an overpay.
You may not want to spend $100 on shoes, but if that's what the shoes cost that's what you pay.
Or don't buy the shoes.

I guess I agree that as far as overpaid free agents go, it's about the market rate (including term).
But I'd rather make the shoes myself. Or buy some discount ones that were able to find buyers after a month of being up for sale.
I actually think Coleman could get 50+ points (a career high) this year or next year. He's a great player. He fills holes too. He seems like a great guy too.
But again, it all comes down to term for me.

But if you bought similar shoes from Raymonds store, then Brouwers store then Neals store and they all terrible then at some point you just have to stop buying them unless its a great deal. Which this was not.

You don’t get it. The “same deal fo half the term” is not available. Less years? More AAV required.

I would suggest people making comparisons from player to player are doing so because it fits their narrative considering there's not a lot in common with them.
I'll ask the same question I asked The Donkey - what WOULD have made you happy today?

Exactly. Then don't sign him at all.
Wait for the discount portion of free agency, or just use your own players.
Not worth signing an asset that will inevitably have considerable negative value.

LOL - “your own players”? Which ones are ready for a second line wing role? Phillips?

A piece of advice.
If you feel the need to say, “ I don’t mind the player, but I would have given him less term and AAV, don’t”.
Hint. The GM would have preferred that too. It wasn’t the market.

Some people would only be happy if the Flames acquired Hedman for a 3rd round pick (half retained), Mackinnon for 2 2nds (extension signed for league minimum) and Eichel picked up on waivers for nothing.
Armchair management is easy to do but I reckon it's a lot more tricky in real life. I'm no Treliving apologist at all but some of the good moves get dismissed with no sound reason because some people just want to complain about everything.
