Wow, Chardy just dispatched Dimitrov in straight sets 6-4 6-4. Grigor didn't play his best, but Chardy is on fire as of late. The winner of Raonic - Schwartzman later tonight will take on Chardy in the 4th round.

woo, Milos takes the opening set in a tie-breaker. Some fine tennis being played by both players so far tonight.

I definitely agree, Milos needs to stay aggressive, but smart aggressive. The slice backhand is looking good both from the backcourt as well as on his approach shots. Milos won 20 out of 28 visits to the net earlier tonight, those are very good numbers.

Denis and Sam Querrey will follow the Kokkinakis - Verdasco match - It could be some time yet as Verdasco is looking to force a third and deciding set.

What you are missing is that your system almost completely disassociates your own ongoing performance from the rankings. Get lucky and take down a Nadal or Federer and get 900-1000 points? That's the full equivalent of winning four or five matches to win a Masters event.
Why should catching fire for one day be potentially worth as much as or more than winning one of the 5th-13th most important tournaments in the world?

I'm surprised Carreno-Busta dispatched Johnson so easily. That guy is just a human backboard.

Can you imagine a match between PCB and Mannarino? They say two negatives make a positive, but I don't think much positive would come out of watching those two guys

For the following reasons.
First, upsetting a top ranked player in the world is a big deal. It's as big a deal as winning a tournament that no one who doesn't watch tennis regularly has ever heard of. Shapovalov beating Nadal was a bigger deal than who won that tournament.
Second, it counterbalances the current points system's tendency to favour keeping top players in top spots. It's too hard to move up the rankings right now, as Federer noted after the AO. The qualifiers are basically playing a mini tournament before the tournament starts, for example.
Third, it gives us more of a reason to care about potential upsets. Some otherwise unremarkable third round match at wherever the hell is suddenly a potential upheaval to the standings.
Fourth, I just sort of threw some numbers out there. Doesn't have to be 10% of your points, I guess. Could be, say, steal 500 points for anyone ranked 10-1, 250 if you're ranked 10-30. There are other ways to structure it. The real core of the idea is "you can standings steal points from higher ranked players by taking them out, and enough of them to make it matter to both you and them".
And last but certainly not least, it'd just be fun.

Anyone who has to play in qualifying deserves to be in qualifying. No way should someone like Kokkinakis be rewarded with a bunch of extra points for taking out Federer this week. He could end up earning more points winning a few rounds at this event than someone winning a major under your system because he got hot for 5 days.

And then potentially lose all those points again if he can't keep it up, because his ranking would go up and there would be other players behind him suddenly in a position to steal the points he took off of Federer.
And frankly, you don't "get hot for five days" and take out a bunch of top ten players. If that happens, you're probably better than your ranking and shouldn't be in qualifiers.

In Toronto last year, for instance, Denis would have earned more than 1200 points (more than the event winner) for beating DelPo, Mannarino and Nadal and only one of those were actually in the top 10 at that point. Top 10 or top 30, the idea just doesn't work for a sport that is built around rewarding players who are able to consistently adapt to others and not just randomly beat a couple higher ranked players.
The best thing that can be done is limiting seeds to the top 16 at these events, which opens the door for everyone.....this is already in the works I believe and gives those middle level players a great shot at more open draws.

Denis up a break and generating plenty of opportunities against Querrey. He has to take this set as Sam's serving is bound to improve from here on out. Great start.

the points stealing thing might make more sense if done only at majors, where the best of 5 format smooths out a lot of the hot streak / luck / randomness. having a top player drop the equivalent of a Master's win of points because they had an off day, are tired from going deep in a tournament the week before, or run into that guy playing the match of their life is pretty punishing for just 3 sets of work.

Looking very much like Shapovalov and Querrey will be going three sets.
