Yeah, you just need to hope they get busted at the border trying to import controlled substances.

I still think the crux of the argument lies with him not informing the team rather than the incident itself.

In other words, basically anything you can spin as being somehow antithetical to the integrity you expect from your players, or some similar nonsense.

Much bigger is the precedent this might set and it's why I'd expect the PA to fight for him.

Thanks for this - I was trying to reconcile the escrow impacts in my mind, and this sounds exactly right.

An issue that many are speculating on here is whether his possible pill addiction is directly correlated to his job. This is obviously a very complex discussion, and precludes me from seeing this as a black and white issue.
As many have mentioned, their treatment of the Voynov situation (much more serious allegations IMO, that have no correlation to his profession) makes this smell much worse.

Yes, however the crux of the issue was the argument of material breach. Doing something that immediately leads to speculation that the player is at risk of felony charges is the benchmark here. That's the gun. The failure to disclose was the bullet.

They didnt really have a treatment for the Voynov situation. He was charged with a crime, suspended by the league, convicted, served his time and chose to go home.
Do you ever watch that Border Security Show? It reminds me of when they tell people that they can either 'Voluntarily Withdraw' or they're going to get kicked out.
Voynov was going back to Russia one way or another, his decision just meant that he wouldnt be going home with a huge boot-print on his ass.
It makes the flight just that much more pleasant.

Well the tore up the contract before he was even charged of anything. IMO if this incident didn't happen they would have waited for another reason as it's pretty clear they were waiting for any little excuse to terminate the contract. Apparently cocaine is rampant in the NHL so it's simply a matter of the right circumstances and I imagine we could very well see another team give this a shot as it's probably worth while to the degree of cap savings they can get in a settlement.

That was remarkably ill-advised but I think that little blunder cost them a cool $100K?

What was he to disclose as he wasn't initially charged? Was he supposed to tell them while crossing the border that the customs found some pills on him but he wasn't charged? I don't think players in the offseason are informing teams of every single think happening to them like this.

Actually, yes. Players are expected to tell the teams if they do things like get busted at the border with drugs. I realize you really just want to be angry because the Kings are scummy, but like it or not, it is really all on Richards for doing something so stupid so as to give them the opening.

@Real_ESPNLeBrun
Kings will take a cap charge every year based on the actual settlement payments made that year. This is in addition to cap recapture charges
Recapture charges are already $1.32M from 15-16 to 19-20, according to Hockey's Cap. Richards cap hit was supposed to be $5.75M for those 5 seasons. I wouldn't be surprised to hear that the cap hit + settlement payments work out to about half his original cap hit.

Hearing that Mike Richards will be on the cap until 2031. Not sure of payment, but that is the term.

Richards was owed $22M in actual salary over the remainder of the contract. $22M/16 = $1.375M annually.
EDIT: Good point about the actual salary, sureloss. That will of course affect how things shake out.

No one has hinted that Richards is getting the full $22 million.
