more TOI...
since 06/07 (Toews and Kane's year), there have been 16 rookies that got 50 points or higher (Yakupov pro-rated). 14 of them had higher TOI than Monahan - most substantially so, (as in 3 minutes). Grabner was a few seconds lower and Yakupov was about 30 seconds lower (but he had higher PP TOI)
By the way, Toews' TOI was 18.40 (Monahan is currently 15:11)

Toews - 54 pts in 64 games (.84 pts per game)
Crosby - 102 pts in 81 games (1.26 pts per game)
Kopitar - 61 pts in 72 games (.85 pts per game)
Getzlaf - 39 pts in 57 games (.68 pts per game)
Duchene - 55 pts in 81 games (.68 pts per game)
Stamkos - 46 pts in 79 games (.58 pts per game)
Bergeron - 39 pts in 71 games (.55 pts per game)
Stepan - 45 pts in 82 games (.55 pts per game)
Monahan (.49 pts per game)
M. Koivu - 21 pts in 64 games (.33 pts per game)
Krejci - 27 pts in 56 games (.38 pts per game)
Plekanec - 29 pts in 67 games (.43 pts per game)
So while he's having a damn solid rookie season, if you were to draw comparison on career-trajectories based only on rookie season results - Monahan looks to be best suited as a #2 centre, or a 1A/1B centre.

I predict that for the remainder of the season, Monahan gets more TOI and has more PPG than he has had to date

Also, you have to remember there was a bunch of games in December that he played through a foot injury which sapped his foot speed entirely. He didn't really get many points during that stretch, but before and since he's been rather good.

Not sure if this has been touched on at all but with the flames out of playoffs is there any way that monahan can get sent to the heat for their playoffs?? Not quite sure how that would work, but I would imagine the 67's would need to be done as well?

I believe he can only be sent down to the OHL if he's sent down anywhere.

Toews - 54 pts in 64 games (.84 pts per game) - Played 1 year of college after draft year
Crosby - 102 pts in 81 games (1.26 pts per game) - NHL same year as draft
Kopitar - 61 pts in 72 games (.85 pts per game) - Played 1 year in Sweden after draft year
Getzlaf - 39 pts in 57 games (.68 pts per game) - Played 2 years of WHL after draft year
Duchene - 55 pts in 81 games (.68 pts per game) - NHL same year as draft
Stamkos - 46 pts in 79 games (.58 pts per game) - NHL same year as draft
Bergeron - 39 pts in 71 games (.55 pts per game) - NHL same year as draft
Stepan - 45 pts in 82 games (.55 pts per game) - Played 2 years of college after draft year
Monahan (.49 pts per game) - NHL Same year as draft
M. Koivu - 21 pts in 64 games (.33 pts per game) - Played 3 years in Finland after draft year
Krejci - 27 pts in 56 games (.38 pts per game) - Played 2 years of QMJHL and 1 year of AHL after draft year
Plekanec - 29 pts in 67 games (.43 pts per game) - Played 1 year in Czech and 3 years in AHL after draft year.
Based on the above, the only true comparables are Crosby, Duchene, Stamkos, and Bergeron; at least until next season is complete. I think he is doing just fine and can be a star C if he really wants it.

He definitely seems super coachable, I think he's improved a lot throughout the season, especially with his physical play and puck battles. I expect that if he maintains his commitment and determination through the offseason, it would be reasonable to expect a steady improvement next season (I don't mean PPG or anything, but maybe up around .7 PPG would be nice).

He has been exactly as advertised by scouts. He's not flashy and doesn't really grab your attention or blow you away with anything he does but he's smart, always in the right spot, and has solid hands around the net. Best part for me is he has that Toews seriousness and is never satisfied with his game.

It's too bad we couldn't get Reinhart this year, because we'd have two solid, non-flashy producers.

Agreed spot on.
I am looking forward to the day when upcoming draft prospects start getting compared to Monahan.

It's looking unlikely but it's not a certainty yet. Silly as it may be I still hold some hope that maybe a team will be rewarded for rebuilding the right way other than just incompetence and tanking. If any team deserves good luck based on compete levels and try this season it's the Flames.

We got a good one in Money, I'm looking forward to watching his career.

And if or when he starts doing that, Joe Nieuwendyk would be a good comparison.

Have there been any recent examples of a player playing a full NHL season and then getting sent down for the AHL playoffs?

I believe Jake Gardiner did it in 2011-12. 75 games with the Leafs then 17 playoff games with the Marlies. Kadri, Scrivens, and Matt Frattin to a lesser extent as well.

Albeit a little different, but Jeff Carter and Mike Richards played their full Junior season in the lock out and then went on to win the cup (no idea what it's called in the AHL) with the Phantoms. This is off the top of my head, so might be slightly off.

Personally I don't think they should send him to Abby, the kid has played a lot of hockey the last calender year. give him a break and let him train his body for next year.

Agreed. He's an NHLer. No need to put him in the AHL.
As awesome as it would be to have him around, I think the Heat will be deep enough for their run.
