I was browsing around on this link and noticed the map updated their satellite photos of Japan. If you change to satellite view and zoom in on the plant, you can see the damage to the plant and browse around to see the destruction to the land.

You can compare it to this link:

To me it looked like they were elderly people so maybe they thought they were safe and/or didn't have enough engery or speed to make it.

That video is unreal, you can actually see in the last few seconds of the clip people getting caught up in the water and being sweep away. It sure makes you feel small.

Some temperatures:

I think to be in cold shutdown all those have to be below 95 degrees C

The worst part is people still feel safe in areas around the globe that is forecast to be even worst, that Japan tsunami wasn't all that big or fast when you look at predictions for other parts of the world (BC coast for example) yet people still refuse to believe it can happen in their lifetime.

Personally I have no desire to build a house or live in areas like Tornado alley,Hurricane prone ares, the summit of a volcano or a coastal area where the tectonic plates are jammed off-shore or on-shore..maybe it's just me, but I think it's dumb as hell.

When you say "feel small" WE ARE SMALL!, the power of this planet can't be harnessed or leashed.

Ya but it doesn't always feel like that all the time and you take it for granted.

I think people just don't want to believe it because it's a scary thought. There is no doubt I live in one of the most beautiful places in Canada but it's also one of the most dangerous when it comes to earthquake/tsumani events. Personally I'm not going to move inland just because it might happen, if it does, it does. Nothing anyone can do about and if it does all I hope for is to be somwhere close enough to my family, friends and pets.

I'm actually pretty prepared for it because I think it will happen. Maybe not tomorrow but I think in my life time we will get the big one. However I think some people think the opposite is because they have been hearing about it forever. I remember being in grade one 20+ years ago when they were saying "soon". Well now when you talk about it people laugh and say oh ya we have been hearing about that forever, it won't happen.

The black dots represent an area that if covered in Solar farms could supply the world's energy. The wiki link says assuming 8% efficiency, which given the location and the technology as it exists today I have little doubt is more than attainable.
So basically you have a solar farm ... the size of Ireland.

But the government said Saturday that radioactivity in the seawater has risen again in recent days. The level of radioactive iodine-131 spiked to 6,500 times the legal limit, according to samples taken Friday, up from 1,100 times the limit in samples taken the day before. Levels of cesium-134 and cesium-137 rose nearly fourfold. The increased levels are still far below those recorded earlier this month before the initial leak was plugged.

Man I feel for you guys over there...I really do. I cant imagine the toll (psychological, emotional, etc) everything has taken on anyone in the area even if they weren't directly affected, and even moreso for those who were.

The whole thing is an damn tragedy.

Not sure if this is a positive but it certainly puts Fukushima into some perspective. The video takes a bit of time but is worth looking at.

"...the levels detected at stations outside Japan up until April 13 have been far below levels that could cause harm to humans and the environment. The levels are comparable to natural background radiation such as cosmic radiation and radiation from the environment on Earth and lower than from manmade sources such as medical applications or nuclear power plants (under normal operations) or isotope production facilities"

There is a documentary done on the Earthquake, the Tsunami and it's destruction.

National Geographic: Witness Disaster in Japan

I'm watching this and at the beginning you think, the earthquake can't be this long. Awful, horrible disaster that really puts the situation in perspective. My mouth is open, I cover it in horror... You just don't understand the power until it's to late.

Thanks, I just watched it. The amount of shaking and deflection is just unfathomable. I'm still shocked.

Unbelievable. 6 Minute earthquake? I had no idea. That documentary is frightening. The speed at which the water comes in is unreal.

Nuclear meltdown at Fukushima plant

One of the reactors at the crippled Fukushima Daiichi power plant did suffer a nuclear meltdown, Japanese officials admitted for the first time today, describing a pool of molten fuel at the bottom of the reactor's containment vessel.
