I watched Kinds of Kindness, yorgos lanthimos (Poor Things, The Lobster) new movie.
It is three stories in one movie, each dealing with (what i assumed) were different relationships we have in life. Each story has the same cast playing different characters.
A little more artsy than his previous movies in that it is three stories in one, but all three were great! funny and compelling.
Would recommend if you like his work.

'Artsier' than The Lobster? That might be a bridge too far for me.

I should preface that artsy, i mean its an anthology, so the stories all cover a theme and aren't necessarily a full fleshed out story. It would be his "French Dispatch"

I remember watching 'The Lobster' with my wife while I was drinking a glass of scotch and I started looking at my glass funny and after she asked I just said:
"Whats in this? Did you spike my drink? Because this movie is messed up."

I loved it! But I'm a big fan of his work so I wasn't expecting this to disappoint.
Doing a complete 180, my daughter is growling out of Disney movies so we’ve been looking for new family movies to watch. A recent one was Spy Kids and my immediate reaction was what the hell am I watching? Was such a wild campy ride that fully leaned into the silliness. Even the bad effects seemed to fit in perfectly with the movies tone. Overall it was just a fun movie for all ages. Had to watch the 2nd one soon after but it didn’t live up to the first. Enjoyed Steve Buscemi but was otherwise bored and don’t think I’ll bother with the 3rd.
The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl (there was also a made-for-TV sequel called We Can Be Heroes that came out recently) will probably do the trick. Also Sky High, maybe High School Musical. I also recently watched the Lindsay Lohan version of Parent Trap with my 7 & 6 year old step-daughters and they really enjoyed it.

Fair enough, its probably not Lobster level surrealism; but, i bet if you go back and re-watch the lobster, it will be less weird given the progress of films now.
Zardoz is a fever dream brought to the screen. Dystopian sci-fi from the 70s is always a trip, but this one set a new standard of oddness. Sean Connery's first role post-Bond, and it's a doozy:

I saw Strange Darling on Thursday, but didn't have time to think about it after hearing about the Gaudreau tragedy that night.
Fantastic movie! One of the best in recent memory. Huge recommendation. I love the way it was laid out, it really adds to the mystery. Giovanni Ribisi was the cinematographer and helped make it into a modern classic. The movie was shot on 35mm which was perfect for where the film was shot, in the Oregon wilderness. I can't say too much without giving away elements of the plot, but it was quite unpredictable. Thought the two leads were excellent. It's a modern classic which I'll be watching yearly.
Definitely worth a look, try and see if before it's out of theatres in a few weeks. One of the best movies of 2024.
Oh and I also saw Afraid... not the worst movie I've seen, but completely forgettable. Something to watch at 10 just before bed time, since it's only 80 minutes long and is the perfect Netflix movie to check out when you have nothing else to watch. I think a problem with many of these PG Blumhouse movies is they can't push the envelope. It feels like they're hitting first base each time where they have an interesting concept, quality acting, or a few good scenes.... but as a whole the movies themselves aren't compelling. M3GAN is one of the exceptions because it was more geared towards adults and didn't hold back. Speak No Evil looks to be similar... and I hope Blumhouse realizes it's better to gear these types of movies their main audience (grown adults) rather than kids and families who don't show up.
Was in the mood for an old fashioned spooky movie the other day, so I watched Black Christmas (1974). I freaking loved it. It has jump scares, but not the kind that kill tension. The killer legitimately sound like a completely unhinged lunatic and I had goosebumps for a bunch of it. It's also fun to see how the police did their thing back in the day, like tracing phone calls.
Give it a watch if you want a great scare or are just nostalgic for the horror movies of the past. I think it was on Shudder. It's excellent.

Great movie, and a Canadian classic. It's often credited with kicking off the slasher movie craze, along with the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

I watch Black Christmas (original and remake) every December, Scream Factory just recently released it on 4K of the original it looks and sounds beautiful. You can tell John Carpenter took a lot of inspiration from it for Halloween.
I might be in the minority but I really also like the 2000s remake. Watching it 20 years later it got too much hate while not as good as the original it's actually a solid entry. And the cast is stacked

The original is a genuine classic.
The 2006 remake is pretty good.
The 2019 remake is god awful.

So…Longlegs is bonkers. Wow! Nic Cage is crazy as hell. Genuinely creepy film. I enjoyed it though. 7 out of 10
I somehow have never seen To live and die in LA until last night. It’s 88% on Rotten tomatoes and is usually in the top 100 movies lists. Absolutely terrible. The writing is sloppy, the music is over the top 80s garbage and too loud in every scene, the characters are unrealized and ole Gil Grissom chews up scenery like Fat Albert at an all you can eat buffet. The only redeeming feature was Willem Defoe but he wasn’t in enough scenes to save this turd of a movie. Awful. Absolutely awful.
0.5 out of 10
