Backlund didn't have 3 "great" seasons, he had one really good season and 2 good seasons. He's being paid to be a second line center and he's broke 50 points once. He's a good defensive guy and had the benefit of playing with one of the teams best players and he can't seem to do much without him. Everyone says that UFA's get over paid well I think this was as good if not better than what he would have got if he became a UFA. He gets severely overrated because he was drafted by the flames, if the flames signed a similar player to that contract it would be viewed as a mistake.

Monahan, Gaudreau has career seasons. Maybe they should consider trading Gio or Dougie this summer for help up front? Smith is likely back next year but certainly not a long term answer

Treviling admitted it was high right in the press conference, that's never a good sign. He's a great player defensively, but on a team that struggles to score his offense is likely only going to go down from here.

If he made it to UFA? Of course they would, that's the nature of good players making it to UFA and why you want to have minimal UFA signings when building a team.

You get a good defensive guy who you know is good defensively and isn't counted on to put up points. Backlund is good defensively but doesn't put up points like he's paid to. I guessing he won't get 50 points again.

Its fine paying guys like Backlund 5+ even with term as long as you have ELC's rolling in putting up points with the easier minutes. Right now flames don't have that.so a guy like Backlund has pressure to be a 50 pt guy instead of a 40pt. Guy.
It's contracts like Brouwer that kill a team not Backlunds.

Maybe under a different system Backlund breaks out offensively like Karlson in Vegas. Too much to hope for?

Agreed, contracts like Brouwer are what cripple a teams ability to sign better players. The issue is that the flames don't have any high end forward prospects to step in. So Brouwer's deal is killing the team now but if Backlund can't put up solid numbers, his deal will look pretty bad long term.
They had to sign him because of lack of depth and other options but if they would have traded him they'd have assets and cap space to try and sign a guy like statsny or trade for someone else and then trade a defenseman for more assets to address other needs.
I'm guessing that if they knew this season would end up as a tire fire, theyight not have signed him.

Team don't let good players hit FA for the most part.
If we didn't sign Backlund, what do you want to Flames to do with the $$ to get better next season? The cap is going up, and cap isn't really a big issue this offseason for the Flames. Having guys who can actually play for them is.

Stajan gone covers Backlunds raise and then some. Now to get rid of Brouwer.

Cap space isn't an issue for them this summer but it will be in the future if players improve. 6 years is a long time if he can't live up to that contract and IMO he's getting paid for the one really good year and banking on him being able to repeat it several times.
It's all easier said than done and the team does need players to play for them but I think admitting to it not being the best contract right away is a bad sign. It all depends on what they do this off season, it's a really tough situation to be in for the flames because they were going to end up looking bad either way with this deal. Let's just hope that the team bounces back next year, more players over-achieve and guys find chemistry again.

Speaking of overpaying UFAs, THW have an article up that looks at some available UFA forwards that they suggest the Flames should pursue. Very underwhelming names here. https://thehockeywriters.com/calgary...n-ufa-targets/
I think Treliving will need to be active on the trade front.

This is a summer where Tre has to put his phone away July 1st. If there is a bargain to be had after the dust settles and all the big money guys are gone then sure but other than that make a hockey trade or two and let a couple prospects duke it out in camp.

I think every team is going to make a pitch to Tavares and I hope BT does, there still are some decent options like Kane, Perron, James Neal, JVR (if he can play his off wing) and there are a few guys who can play in the bottom 6 but it would be ideal to let the teams prospects take those spots. Now the only guy I'd really pay a lot for is JT so the other deals would have to make sense, the way Kane is playing I would really think about giving him a higher offer.

Evander Kane should be a target, if he makes it to free agency.
