This should be his last season in the WHL. If he returns next season, he'll be an overager. We don't want that.
Additionally, he should (has to) be the starting goalie with the Heat next year. No slowing things down like we did with Irving.
As much as I like Brust and Taylor, they don't have a future with the Flames. Pick one of them to back up and give 2/3 of all games to Brossoit.
That would be great and all, but it's rarely the path a rookie goalie follows once he turns pro.
Putting a rookie goalie straight out of the WHL into an AHL style of game is confidence suicide for a young goalie.
Let's take the Texas Stars for example. Jack Campbell is a sophomore this season, but he's getting approximately 1/3rd of the starts behind Cristopher Nihlstorp. Most rookie goalies in the AHL start out this way.
Personally, I'm a bigger fan of Taylor than Brust, so I'd like to see Taylor as the starter next season with Brossoit backing him up. Ease him into the professional way of life and pace of the game.

Who goes then? There is Kiprusoff, Ramo, and Irving. I don't see Ramo coming over, just to be thrown to the AHL. Kiprusoff could be bought out, traded, or retire.
Either way, what you suggest has 3 players in the NHL. Who's the odd man out and what happens to him?
Easy. Whoever earns the backup job in training camp next year. If Ramo doesn't want to play in the AHL than he can go back to Russia. No guarantees Kipper is back next year either.
What are the chances of seeing him in at least a backup position with the Heat next season? Maybe Brust or Taylor as the starter with Brossoit as the backup.
Let Ortio stay in Finland and keep being a top 3 goalie in that league.
Obviously there are lots of possible scenarios for goaltending next year, but I think it is almost a certainty that Brossoit is with the Heat (him and Taylor maybe?)
As a couple others have said, I think it would be best if Ortio stayed in Europe for another year.

You saw Ortio play last season, I believe, so I'll defer to you. Do you think he needs more maturity before coming over here?
I know his numbers weren't great last year, and if he were to come over next year and struggle again, it could very well end his NHL chances. Maybe another year in Europe would be best for his development.

When he played in Abby he wasn't given consistent starts similar to Irving this season. I would take his numbers in Abby with a grain of salt.

I would hope he would/could spend at least another two years in Finland. Young goalies almost never do excellent in the AHL. Around 24-26 is when they start getting the hang of things.
I didn't like Ortio's game at all last season when he was with the Heat. He had a very bad case of Luongoitis. Ten foot rebounds and fell to his stomach far too often.
By the sounds of it, he's doing excellent on a bad team in Finland. That can only mean good things, so the Flames should keep him there.
Does anyone know the rules regarding European players and maintaining their rights overseas?

When Glenn Hall used to coach the Flames goalies, he used to say it was better for young goalies to play on bad teams to get more work (I think he was talking more about goalies at minor hockey level, but I think the same would apply here.)
It's not like the Flames aren't deep in goalie prospects anyway, so another year overseas probably wouldn't hurt him.

MADISON, Wis. -– Veteran University of Wisconsin defenseman John Ramage, who was named the No. 1 Star of the Game both nights while leading the visiting Badgers to a two-game conference road sweep at Minnesota State last weekend, has been named the Red Baron® WCHA Defensive Player of the Week for January 15.
A 6-0, 205-pound senior captain from St. Louis, Ramage played a starring role for the Badgers, who posted 4-3 and 2-1 overtime victories at No. 11-ranked Minnesota State on Jan. 11-12, extending their unbeaten streak to 10 games (7-0-3), their winning streak to six, and recording their first-ever sweep in Mankato. He scored both game-winning goals, put seven shots on goal, earned a +3 plus/minus rating and keyed penalty-killing units that successfully fought off 11 of 12 opponent power-plays.

They were both pretty nice goals for a defensive d-man. Maybe he picked somethings up from all the potent offensive d-man that have played there, schultz, gardiner, mccabe.

I'm going to be pretty disappointed if we chose not to sign him. I think there are a number of players that we should ditch a roster spot for in favour of Ramage.
Jankowski picked up an assist off a nice pass for the lone Friars goal tonight.
Also, Jon Gillies stopped 48 shots in the 2-1 loss.
In the Rebel's 4-1 win over the Oil Kings, Turner Elson scored a goal. Laurent Brossoit, despite letting in three goals, was named the games 3rd star.

Highlights from the Friars loss, no sound unfortunately. Friars are the team in black, Jankowski #10.
Gilles makes a few sweet stops and ~1:23 mark of the video is Janko's assist, which is pretty nice as he dekes out a defender and slides the puck across for the goal.
