I think it's only done if the team commits to a rebuild

We would have to retain about 2.5 mil in a trade though

If he has another 55-60 point season there is no reasonable amount of retention where a team will take him on.

Flames should use NHL Edge to figure out which players have the most speed burst over 20 and with high top speed, and then trade for them to play with Huby. I don’t think our pro scouting ever looked at data like that so watch out they might get one right

If they are rebuilding full on, you may as well keep him instead of spending assets to get rid of him.
Hope he eventually rebounds enough such that as he gets closer to the end of his contract, he might be movable.

Interestingly enough, our top 3 fastest based on NHL Edge is:
Zadorov - 23mph
Duehr - 22mph
Kadri - 22mph
Nobody else hits the 22mph mark.

I think the best chance for the flames is to get the first overall pick and then hope an 18-year old can carry Huby.

Well, they're on the right track for that.

Have two players ever been traded from a team and then sent back to the same team?

Also, the talk of Hanifin leaning towards an extension in Calgary likely bodes well for his value. It makes the Flames look less desperate and also gives the acquiring team hope that they can also extend him before free agency hits.

I highly doubt the Flames negotiated in good faith with Hanifin and come close to getting a deal done, only to turn around and send him packing.
A Hanifin trade is not happening.

The team can't rebuild as long as guys like Huberdeau and Kadri are around, and to a lesser degree Markstrom. Trading off other players won't be enough to spark a full rebuild. Even if the team does bottom out and gets some high picks that turn into stars, we won't be able to pay them because of the anchors we have.
Yeah yeah, the cap will go up a bit, but so do player salary expectations. I don't see the cap going up enough to make those anchors insignificant.

Things change. If the record doesn't turn around then Hanifin might say he wants out again.

He never said he wanted out. He said he wasn't ready to negotiate in the summer.

That's hyperbolic. By 2026 the only Flames under contract are Huberdeau, Coleman (one year left), Weegar, and Kadri. The bigger issue with the tear down rebuild is the pick in play in the Monahan trade IMO.
If they sign Lindholm and Hanifin to 8 year deals then it will be tough

No, he said in the offseason he wanted to return the US. Agent is flowing stuff through Friedman obviously but the progress on an extension was out of nowhere basis the last update.

I wish we would stop with the trading Huberdeau scenarios..
It isn't happening.
Hold out hope there is a way Kadri can be moved but please forget about the former moving anytime soon.
