Vancouver almost has to keep him now.
Their top 6 is ugly already with Miller gone. Boeser is unsigned UFA. I cant see hughes being happy if they decided to do a hard reset for a year or two.
I can see why they were trying ti deal for Necas, because they need a piece like that back.
I dont know if the sabres would even do it at this point but cozens+byram still leaves them with an extremely ugly top 6 forward group.
Right now teams will be lowballing the #### out of them.
I think they need to hope he bounces back unless another necas type deal comes up.

I’d take Huberdeau over Pettersson everyday. 95% of the time Pettersson looks like he’s out for a public skate.

When he was a 100 point young center the price was fine but when you make almost 12M you need to show up

He might actually just be a 60-70 point player. That 100 point season sprung out of nowhere. He had 66, 66, 21, 68 and 100 and now back down. Kind of like Nugget Hopkins 100 point season when he is a 45-55 point guy.
At least with Huberdeau you saw it coming with progress every year and would have likely hit 100 the year prior if not for injury.

He was what 24? When he had 102 points though.

Some guys do peak early. Could be coaching as well. His best season was mostly under Boudreau. His ok seasons are all under terrible coaches like Travis Greem and Rick Tochett.
We won’t know until Tochett gets the boot.

Yeah and prior to this season he had 412 points in his first 407 NHL games which is pretty great no matter how you slice it.
In the season and a half stretch before this injury supposedly occurred (end of January 2024) he had 166 points in 129 games (7th in the NHL) and 66 goals (9th)
At his best he's a top end offensive talent that also strong defensive metrics (at times elite defensive metrics) but what we are witnessing right now seems to be his worst.

If your training staff thinks the injury isn't chronic then I think some team could potentially get him for much less than he would have cost in a trade 12 months ago.

(48 pts in the 69 reg.season games and 6 pts in 13 playoff games since signing)
He is not the first and won't be the last that it happens to.
But he is the most expensive, and it may take a long while til he works his way out of it. Stay far away IMO.
Huberdeau experienced the same thing IMO.

He looks to me like a classic case of a player needing a change of scenery out of that market and away from that team and head coach.

I wouldn't write Petterson off yet. Change of scenery with some good linemates he should be a ppg guy again.

Can’t write him off but at 11.6m for 8 years, that’s too big of a risk to take on.

Plus, if the rumours of the dressing room being pissed off that they traded the wrong guy are true, you may have yourself a mighty expensive locker-room cancer on your hands.

Former 1st rounder Grigori Denisenko was traded from Vegas to Nashville yesterday for future considerations. Just 7 assists in 33 NHL games, and just 143 points in 208 AHL games.

It wouldn’t be surprising if some players felt that way, but the whole room?
If this is accurate then there must be a pretty big gap between the players and management, which would be unacceptable.
A GM must have his finger on the pulse of the room. No way would/should Rutherford/Alvin or any other GM for that matter make this kind of move without being all but certain they are making the move with best intentions of the room and culture in mind.

Proper rehab isn’t just on the team. Dreger suggested on the Barn Burner that Pettersson doesn’t put in the work in the off-season to build up his strength.
And there’s another explanation for his decline in speed bursts: he’s sulking and playing half-heartedly.
Flakey, soft players are genuinely a thing. And just because a lot of people who call them out are traditional hockey guys with bad takes doesn’t mean they aren’t right that flakey, soft players are a bad fit in this sport. Especially if they’re expected to be leaders and core players.
His 4 Nations performance helped cement the hockey world’s re-evaluation of Pettersson. He may just be what we’re seeing - a skilled but inconsistent 50-70 point forward who shies away from contact. A taller Jeff Skinner.
Maybe another team can find the right buttons to push to get Pettersson to dig in and play with intensity and jam. But with his price-tag, it’s a huge gamble.
