I wonder if Treliving can get a Coleman like return for Bennett just because of the playoff Sam Bennett reputation? Could the Leafs get that desperate to give up a 1st or top prospect?

Anders Lee out for the season, have to think they go for someone like Hall to somewhat fill the top 6 LW spot.

Interesting! I was going to propose Bennett for Engvall and Liljegren. Similar value. Liljegren would thrive here imo.

|
He's playing other teams top players every night. He's going to have some nights where he just gets caved in, that's just how it is when you're going against other teams top lines.
I don't know if that's inconsistency - or if that's just a guy that's getting asked to play the tough minutes every night against the stars of the league.
And the majority of the time he actually comes out on top.
His poor playoffs are a bit overstated too.
In 18-19 he got Mackinnoned. He had a 52% xGF in that series, we had 17 HD chances for vs 9 against with him head to head against Mackinnon, but got outscored 0-3 because Mackinnon.
When Mackinnon was on the ice but Backlund wasn't then the Flames had a 23.1% xGF.
So some back luck for Backlund in that series but he was still easily the best option we have head to head against Mackinnon.
Last year overall he wasn't really the issue either. He was playing the toughest matchups with Tkachuk hurt, so the line was Reider-Backlund-Mangiapane.
Overall he was still +50% on Corsi, and xGF% but we were outscored 5-7 at 5v5.
Big thing though is when you're asking a guy to play the other teams top lines every night he's going to get scored on sometimes and have some bad games. That's just how it is.

I disagree - Backlund only makes $5.25M and he earns his money.
I just don’t see Darryl deploying Dube or Mangiapane to do Backlund’s job (in the next 18-24 months anyway) if he ever had the choice.
Neither of them even play centre at this level.

This discussion seems pretty moot. What are the odds of acquiring someone better than Dube/Mangi/Backlund w/o giving up one of our protected players?
I don't think this team should be buying, but if we did want a [hopefully cheap] forward rental, how about Brandon Sutter?

If they are looking for someone to acquire, it has to be someone who can play on the right wing. That is our biggest hole. Be it a prospect or young player like Troy Terry, or a young veteran like Rickard Rakell.
Basically calls the ducks I guess?

I wonder if people who want to trade Backlund even watch our games, especially the last 3.

It's as if the large majority of fans don't truly understand just how terribly difficult it is to find players than can truly impact a game on a day to day basis. There is maybe a list of 5-10 players in the NHL that you can say that about. Calgary doesn't have one, and likely won't for the foreseeable future.
Hell watch someone like Jack Eichel play consistently. This is a player that is viewed as a franchise level talent, but the guy absolutely floats around for periods of play at a time and because he put's up a secondary assist on the PP after 20 minutes of icetime his counting stats make him look far more impactful than he is on a regular basis.
These are the best of the best players in the world. The talent gap between the star players and role players is a small as its ever been. Mikael Backlund is one hell of a hockey player and for those of you that can't see that I suggest you watch more out of town games to give you some perspective.

Or they haven't watched a game for the last decade.

I wonder if the Flames could land Zach Hyman? Modified 10 team NTC at 2.25 and is UFA next year
RH winger, wonder if there could be anything possible with Bennett.

If they want Bennett, Hyman is the price.
Hyman is a UFA, and Bennett is 4 years younger and an RFA
Cap works - reasonable deal.

he is exactly what the Mony/Johnny line needs...if you watch enough Leafs games you will notice he helps every line he plays on.
I want the Flames to go after him IF he hits free agency.

Never happening.
1 - Marner & Matthews are worse players when he is not on their line (eye test, no fancy stats)
2 - He is 1 of the few guys on that team that crash & bang
3 - They expect him to take a home town discount next contract
4 - Hyman is Bennett with better totals
5 - TML has their centers, why would they want Bennett - a player who has complained that he wasn't playing center.
Lastly - Hyman is currently the home town darling. He has been named by many fans (on news and in conversations) as their current favorite. He does too many community events to count. He represents a whole ethnic community with in the city (the Jewish kid who went to Jewish schools and became an NHLer.)
