^^^ That's how sanctions work. You punish the masses so they take action against the leadership.

I’m not sure that you can prove a premise based on a few outliers.

Execpt that leader will gladly welcome all of these Russian players back home to play in the KHL. There will be zero impact or influence of the action.

And the players will be happy foregoing millions of dollars in salaries to play back in the KHL and keep Putin off his meds. Good to know.

Wow Andy and Rono are sure negative. Pretty easy to dismiss absolute statements like that. They just sound like angry fans, not analysts.

Sutter is a master of finding players appropriate roles they can flourish under. It doesn't always work, not all coaches and players mesh, but man no one reads a skaters strengths and weaknesses like Darry Sutter, the guys hockey mind is lightyears beyond most.

The more I watch this team come together, it strikes me that a missing piece in the bottom 6 is a Marcus Nilson/Ville Nieminen type. Guys that can play up and down the lineup, have some skill and 2-way play, and some grit. Sutter needs more guys in his bottom 6 he can trust defensively and importantly can play his system with speed, forecheck and puck possession.
Couple under the radar names that fit the bill for me ahead of the deadline: Namestnikov and Johansson.
The type of acquisitions that won't be cost prohibitive and may not get 'wow' reactions from the media but would be instrumental in a playoff run, IMO.

Is it a case of outliers? Or is it the case that - for defensemen especially - these stats are very much a function of opportunity and teammates?

Stupid view? Need to be better than that? What are you talking about? I was merely referring to the Russian players being concerned about getting their work visas cancelled or revoked based on what's going on with Russian now and all the different sanctions that are being implemented and planned, including all the recent talk from the hockey community about the Russian team potentially being uninvited to the upcoming WJC in August. If I were a Russian professional athlete on a work VISA outside of Russia, I'd be somewhat concerned too.

That's not how sanctions work. The purpose of sanctions is either (a) to make it harder for the leadership to keep their armed forces supplied, or (b) to make meaningless righteous noises so the ‘international community’ can applaud itself for doing nothing.
When Mussolini invaded Abyssinia, the League of Nations imposed sanctions. They were meant to be type (a) sanctions, but several countries set their diplomats to work to have oil excluded from the sanctions. The one thing Mussolini needed to import to keep his army running was, of course, oil. So excluding oil turned the sanctions into type (b) at a stroke. All they accomplished was to annoy Mussolini and influence him to ally himself with Hitler the following year – with incredibly disastrous results for the whole of humanity.
The type (a) sanctions being discussed now involve kicking Russia out of SWIFT, which will leave them without access to hard currency to pay for imports (except by spending their own gold reserves, which are limited). Once again, diplomats are trying hard to leave SWIFT off the table and reduce the sanctions to type (b) – which is invariably a stupid move.
By the time sanctions come into play, it is perfectly obvious that the masses have no say in who rules them or what their rulers do. The question is whether the sanctions actually hurt the rulers where it counts – in their military power.

It'll be interesting in how it all unfolds in the next little while regarding the depth of sanctions and boycotts. There's no question there will be some negative spotlight on famous Russian celebrities (notably NHL players) that have some connection to Putin (whether intended or unintended). Ovechkin is in a hard spot right now with the media. Would not want to be in his situation; he's damned if he does or damned if he doesn't regardless of his true feelings about it all.

Players wont be happy.
But what can they do.
Nothing.
Will have zero impact on any decisions Putin makes.
