I do agree that you want to tread carefully here as 28 for a forward isn't finished, but it's a very solid bet that his best hockey has been played. Reminds me of Hamonic in that there is this idea that a higher price should be paid for a guy because he's thought to have a value contract.
|
For sure, I do agree that we could use a few righties, just not sure that this is the guy you pay a premium for.

Yes. For example, Vegas picked Methot from Ottawa in the expansion draft and flipped him to Dallas less than a week later.

I have a feeling Johnny, Mony and Tkachuk will all be available for the right price. Johnny/Mony do not fit with the new gameplan. Tkachuk has been all talk this year.

It does kind of make me laugh how the grass is always greener on the other side for some fan base.
Over the last two seasons at 5v5:
Rakell: 14 goals, 41 points, 49.3% Corsi For
Backlund: 12 goals, 39 points, 52.2% Corsi For
But some think Rakell is a guy we should sell the farm for and while also saying Backlund is a guy that shouldn’t even be protected.

A lot of this Backlund talk is probably because we have Ryan - who is cheaper, and I would argue a pretty similar (though lesser) player. But having two of those guys is a bit of a hidden treasure. Smart, 2 way centers who can play up the lineup don't grow on trees -though I would argue Backlund plays too high in the lines ideally. These two as 3/4 would be among the best bottom 6 centers in the league.

What are the dates between end of Stanley Cup playoffs, and Free Agency?
Does Gaudreau's 5 team limited trade clause (NTC), take effect July 1?

Lindholm
Monahan
Backlund
Ryan
They already are our 3/4 centers...

Darryl Sutter would not allow Backlund to be exposed. He's Darryl Sutter's #1 center right now and we all know how much Darryl cares about centers. From what I've heard in interviews so far, Darryl has been asked about Lindholm and Monahan and he's responded with something along the lines of "has more to give" for both of them. Haven't heard much in the way of criticism about #11 from the coach yet. His minutes would also suggest the same as Backlund has played the most minutes of any center for 3 straight games now. Doesn't sound like someone who will be exposed at all, sounds more like Backlund will be #1 on Darryl's protected list.

Important to note that Backlund is the only player on the Flames who Sutter drafted.

There would be an epic headbutt if Sutter wants to expose 26 year old Lindholm over 32 year old Backlund.
Won't happen.

I don’t think it’s either/or. As you say, zero chance Lindholm is exposed.

Meh. I will never get on board with the legend of Michael Backlund. The guy is way too inconsistent for my liking and sucks in the playoffs. Was invisible to terrible for a large part of this season. This team needs players that bring it every game not 30-40 games a season.

This basically describes every player on the team this year not named Markstrom. No one is asking you to think of him as some super star but silly to think he doesn't do a lot of little things right even when he's struggling and when he's not struggling he become one of if not the best player on the ice in a lot of games both offensively and while taking hard matchups.

Leafs media is saying the Leafs need a guy like Bennett and they should go hard after him.
