Agreed, he also is far from a pylon.

I don’t think that the proper construct of a roster includes having a third pairing D making that much money. Second pairing, sure, but Big Z is not a second pairing guy. Pass even though I like him.

Disagree. I think he can be a solid 4 as long his partner is willing to hang back and can skate. He's hard to bring down and actually seemed to find his hands this year.

Zadorov is kind of a 4/5 guy in my opinion. Borderline.
Perhaps in theory, he could play on the second pairing on some teams. I do think Sutter coached him well - not all coaches will.
But he's just probably not going to be cap efficient.
He might be better than Mackey. But dollar for dollar, the Flames might as well go with Mackey and use it as a development opportunity.

The defense core conumdrum unfortunately sits pretty far down the priority list this offseason. That means all the guys on D needed contracts all take a back seat to Johnny and Chucky and Mangiapane and then however they deem the priorities list on defense .
There's so much at stake for the entire team after Gaudreau. It's key they get every step right or salvaged to minimize the damage.

Markstrom just came second in Vezina voting, a team would definitely love to add him.

Not even Sutter thinks he’s a 5/6 guy haha. He’s not. Anyway, if you hardball players of his calibre they leave. I get they can’t afford everyone though.

If we did go full rebuild Lindholm and Markstrom would give us a haul.
I think it was Vinny but I was a fan of the Newhook + Byram + something else for Lindholm and Markstrom.

Nobody can pay 4.5 for a bottom pairing dman. That’s what he is on the Flames if resigned

Which of Hanifin, Anderson, Tanev or Kylington is going to give their spot to him?

Well, on paper, Kylington, but it comes down to pairings...
But regardless I'd rather not spend on bottom pairing D, and I'd be fine with trying out Valimaki or Mackey or other prospects in that role and spend the $4mil+ elsewhere

The Flames spread out their ice time more evenly with the 3 pairs last year. Not having any highly paid individuals did permit that to an extent. Still the third pair was used pretty much to perfection by Sutter. Try and squeeze a bit more out of Zadorov and it could change the perception on him. Teams with 1-2 ELCs or bridge deals in the top 4 can afford a luxury #5 like Zadorov...but usually not for 4 straight years.

He was 4th on TOI per game for the Flames and only 1:30 less than Tanev. Sutter was quoted as saying they don’t have a 3-4 or 5-6 pairings they just have D pairings. He was utilized in various situations based on context all season and he has a lot of other intangibles like hitting, strength and overall toughness that really helped out the back end.
To frame him as some 5-6 D man is super disingenuous. You watch him walk and try to backfill with some rookie or crappy journeyman UFA like we always do who isn’t tough over what, $1mm raise per year? Anyway, whatever haha

Based on TOI there’s no need for Kylington to give up a spot as he’s already theoretically behind him on the depth chart.

Top 4 is already set. Hopefully Kylington has another big jump. Mackey already signed. Bring back Stone. See what happens from there.

Hanifin. If Andersson and Zadarov actually communicate they could be a #### of a pair. Now he's a 2!

Hahaha I am saying we don’t have almost 5M to spend on a bottom pairing dman that makes at least a couple dumb mistakes every game.
We have 2-3M at most for those
And Gud would be the one to sign, tougher cheaper and less mistake prone

Yeah but both he and Gudbranson were two of the 25 most sheltered defensemen in the league. Props to Darryl for utilizing them well but he could likely get similar performance from Mackey in that same sheltered role for far less money.

When the Flames acquired Toffoli, I had hoped for Anderson but can understand why Toffoli may have been preferred. Toffoli had the more palatable contract and Sutter likely vouched for him.
Regardless, I’m sure there are quiet a few GM’s who would like Anderson on their roster.

And only reason it didnt leak is because Lou told everyone involved if it did he would cancel the deal
