I dunno, I wouldn’t put too much stock into it. Players really aren’t used to playing hockey to the level that the worlds junior tourney is at this point of the year. Add into that they haven’t played two months of their respective junior league season heading into this tourney and I think it’s why we’ve seen a lot of chippy hockey early on here with players looking rusty. Coronato’s skating looked fine to me in the replays I saw of him from last year and he looks like he’s quite thick already for a smaller stature guy so when his speed takes the next level and catches up with his growth I think he’ll be explosive at the NHL level. He’s an intriguing prospect that I look forward to seeing in a flames uni.

Coronato skates just like Mason Raymond.

#10 Mason Raymond

Mason Raymond might be the most pure north-south skater on this list. It’s not that he’s not great at the east-west stuff, he’s just a machine built for a drag race, not NASCAR. Which is to say, if the 10 players on this list were to hop on a frozen river and race for 500 feet or so, there’s a good chance his nose is in the mix at the finish line.

That means that every time Raymond blocks a shot or ends up in a flat out footrace, he’s going to be the guy getting first touch on the puck, and in situations like the one below, those extras strides are all he needs to get his also-quite-good shot off.
It’s a great comparison, he’s not the most shifty silky skater you’ll find so you won’t see too much edge work or east/west dancing from him but don’t get caught flat footed with him snagging a puck heading north. I really think the flames are putting an emphasis on skating and fitness now more then ever and I think Coronato is the type of prospect that wants to put in the work so it’s exciting to see how he’ll put it all together.

There's a lot of coasting going on in these games, players at this level don't always move their feet. When there's a loose puck in the offensive zone, or pass coming to him in the slot, he's fast as a fart in a windstorm. No worries about his skating.

Rasmus Anderson used to be called Shrek and was a mediocre skater. Got himself a nutritionist significant other and Danielle Fujita and you wonder why he wasn't a first round pick today.

I'm sure they can help Coronato to be effective in the NHL with a bit of coaching.

He looked quick today when needed. I’m very comfortable with our scouting staff, up to our development.

Really love Coronato's details away from the puck. Feet always moving, head always moving.

After watching Matt Coronato in the first two games of the ongoing World Junior Championships, he reminds me a lot of Zac Parise. Similar build, just under 6' tall, a stocky looking 180-190lbs, loves to curl along the boards to shift away from defenders, heavy wrister (really puts his weight into it), decent passing, decent skating, nice away from the puck movement to create space, and showed that nice deflecting ability on the goal yesterday. After Logan Cooley got hit awkwardly into the boards yesterday, the USA even looked to Coronato as the go to puck carrier that they dropped it back to in their own zone, when bringing the puck up on the powerplay. Although not sublimely skilled, he is still modestly skilled, and looks as though he as all the tools to be a legitimate top 6 player for us. Really starting to get excited about this pick. I don't think he has an amazingly high ceiling, but he seems to have a high floor. If he can carve out a Parise type career, it will be a 13th overall well spent (Parise went 17th overall incidentally).

Coronato all alone in front and dekes around the goalie before shelving it vs Austria.

Cooley and Coronato have been dynamite together.

the kid has done and said all the right things since being drafted by us, I'm sure it won't be an issue. I know why people are antsy, but Fox being a dick doesn't mean Coronato will kick us in the nuts too.
