I mean what a disaster for Spain, they looked like easily the best team in the tournament for the first 190 minutes they played, now they're in deep trouble with Italy up next.

Albania move one step closer!!
Slovakia and Northern Ireland are in.
Albania needs 1 of the following to happen, Turkey need both.
1. Neither Italy or Belgium lose
2. Hungary beats Portugal

Anyways, I've expressed my dissatisfaction with the format of the tournament and group stage games not meaning much and being largely negative but KJ makes a good point stating that the real importance is in winning the group as it runs you up against 3rd place teams allowing you to go deeper whereas any other spot and you get a much tougher road.
And this is a perfect example, Spain looking like the best team thus far, along with Italy IMO, and now one of them is going to be going home early.

Yeah but what's Italy's reward for finishing first!?

Northern Ireland would have qualified anyway in the old system

France, Germany, England, Italy and Spain are on the same side of the bracket.
We're going to get a new team in the final.

Screw the same side of the bracket - Italy, Spain, & Germany in the same quarter of the bracket.
Italy have one of their best group stage performances in years - and get rewarded with Spain in the Round of 16, and IF (pretty big if IMO) they win then they get Germany in the Quarterfinals.
Thanks UEFA!
This Croatia team is very good though - with a softer side of the bracket on that side I would not be surprised at all if they made it to the finals. Maybe the fans will go do somethings stupid and get themselves disqualified - then Spain wins the group and Italy will get Turkey.

I'm gonna say joining Slovakia and Northern Ireland as 3rd place finishers will be Ireland and Austria. Ireland actually caught a nice break with Croatia winning because now Italy really have nothing to play for with a locked in match up, and with Spain up next you figure they'll rest all of their starters.

England will be kicking themselves, if they had won yesterday, they could have cakewalked to the final

I don't mind all that much that the tourney got expanded but the way the matchups are set for the round of 16 are really dumb.
I know someone posted earlier about how certain groups had clear advantages compared to others.

Yup, and now the door is open for Bale to take Wales there instead.

Croatia and maybe Belgium are better than them.
You just know that Portugal is going to finish second in their group as well.
France, Germany, Italy, Spain, England, Portugal, on the side.
Aw well makes for great match ups on one side of the bracket at least.

Yup - this was so stupid. With some groups getting 3rd place entries etc.
Plus you somehow had the two groups of death paired together in the 1 vs 2 matchup of Italy vs Spain.
Should have re-seeded the whole thing after the group stage.

Belgium has more talent but England have played much better as an overall team. Croatia has been impressive, but you'd still rather draw them than Germany or France.
