Other team sports can have one dominant player take over and completely overhaul a team just based on their ability and position (QB, Pitcher, point guard, striker...). Hockey just isn't built that way.
The only position that comes even close in hockey would be the goalie. If you have a lights out goalie, then you can stay pretty competitive. But even Hasek didn't win a cup until he went to Detroit.

By my count 5 of those players have nothing to show for it and the 5 that do had a hell of a supporting cast to go with them.

In the last 25 years the Art Ross Trophy winner has won the cup 3 times:
Malkin in 2009 with the Penguins
St. Louis in 2004 with the Lightning*
Lemieux in 1992 with the Penguins

The question isn't if McDavid is the next Malkin, St. Louis or Lemieux but who are the Oiler's version of Crosby/Stall, Stillman/Richards/Lecavalier and Stevens/Jagr?

Even if McDavid is the leagues most prolific scorer in the comming years one player does not make a team and they especially don't extinguish a dumpster fire.
I don't think people are concerned that the Oilers will suddenly win the Cup every single year because of McDavid. I think people are worried they'll be a playoff team each year. Being a generational talent doesn't guarantee your team the Cup...but it makes it incredibly likely that you take up 1 of the 8 playoff spots each year.

Either way, it's getting ridiculous in here that with how great of a season the Flames are having, there's still always 2-3 threads at the top of the board discussing the Oilers. They're off golfing and shouldn't even register on our minds until the off-season!!

Case in point: Jamie Benn just won the Art Ross. The Dallas Stars still missed the playoffs.
