Depends on how high you are on Kessel. Are you going to get a player in the draft at our pick as good as Kessel? Highly unlikely. The term on his contract is a concern as is his lack of defensive play. Hartley can work on that though and Kessel is not a post apex player. Depending on what else besides that 1st I would do it.

Volchenkov might come cheap. I could see the Flames going after a guy like that.

You buy into the Toronto media too much. A high end mid career RW that consistently scores at least 30, exactly what the Flames need. Just depends on the price.

Renaud Lavoie @renlavoietva
Teams are telling me the Maple Leafs are working hard to trade Phil Kessel and Dion Phaneuf today.

Makes sense. They're the only two players on that roster that can really screw up their chances at McDavid/Eichel/Hanifin. Without them, they have a half decent chance to hit rock bottom.

With all the trades that have happened so far the media guys will only have this to play up for the next 6 hours. I highly doubt either get traded today.

I don't know but this might be the perfect chance to grab a big piece for less than market value if the Leafs are desperately trying to move him. I think Kessel would become a much better player under Hartley.

Honestly, I am not the biggest Kessel fan in the world but if the Flames can grab him for a reasonable price (yes a first is included), I think you'd be foolish to pass it up.
Who knows how much better he can be with the Flames strength and conditioning mandate.

I would think Toronto would have to eat salary to get Mantha out of Detroit.

Sounds like Michalek to the Blues is being held up on the conditional return based on Michalek's performance.
Michalek is coming off a concussion.

Phaneuf isn't what he was even just a couple of years ago. He's a 2nd pair d man now. He's not getting a top prospect back.

I doubt it. A few weeks ago Holland said Mantha and Larkin are untouchables.

What the hell? they get out of cap jail only to put themselves back in? I suppose Voynovs contract doesnt affect their cap though.

Then I can't see them getting Phaneuf. The Leafs are not giving him away for nothing. Looking at the return D men are getting he will certainly grab a high end prospect. The Leafs don't have to move him right now, they would like to but if they don't get a big offer they will simply wait until the draft.
