McKenzie's rankings are out:

Quote:
"If you look at (TSN's Top 12), there are four really good centres, four really good defencemen and four really good wingers," one scout noted. "If you're picking in the Top 12 in this draft, you really have your choice by position of some really good prospects that offer a lot of different (style) looks."
I think biggest surprise is Sprong is at 32.

Rasmus Andersson has fallen right off Button's map while maintaining a high 2nd round status in Futureconsiderations rankings.

Korostelev has fallen to a lower 2nd round ranking in Buttons list. I think he's better than that.

Rantanen has jumped up into the top ten. could go higher come draft day.

Werenski jumped up too IIRC.

Provorov is around the same spot he was before, expected a bigger jump so thats a bit of a surprise.

Carlo is right in the Flames wheel house which is cool as I'd LOVE for them to take him.

It really is amazing the meteoric rise of Crouse, the WJC has turned him into a consensus top 10 pick.

I really think the Flames should consider moving up to get Provorov. From what I've seen of these prospects he's the one who seems to impress every single game. Assuming he goes ~10-12 and we're picking, say, 15-17, what do you think it would take to move up just a few spots?

based on this article the cost would be Flames 2nd + which would be 45th to 47th overall.

but in reality it really depends on how the other teams see the tiers breaking down. If they see a huge drop off in talent trading down from 10th to 15th, it is going to be expensive, if they think they can get a similar upside prospect by moving down then it just may take the 2nd rounder.

So who's the pick for biggest slider this draft? I'm going with Oliver Kylington.

Rantanen. Especially if he struggles again in Finland.

I'll be honest, I will not cry if he falls to CGY.

My colleague E-Mac takes a look at 5 players who may helped their draft stock and 3 players who might have hurts theirs (albeit in one game) after the Top Prospects game.

From the obvious (Travis Konecny) to the not so obvious (Brendan Guhle) to the controversial (The Flying Dutchman Daniel Sprong - some liked his game, some did not).

Link to full article

*I wanna like The Flying Dutchman "Sprong", but maybe E-Mac has hit on something, as Sureloss noted Bobby Mc has him in the 2nd.

His ice time on TPS went way up after WJC. Reportedly also been playing center.

Unfortunately his team has gone straight down the toilet. Fans throwing season tickets on the ice.

So you might have a situation where his play has improved while his offensive stats might not show it at all. Interesting with regard to his draft position because he could be much better than his numbers.

I believe there was a head scout before the WJC discussing Rantanen. He said his Finnish scout was reporting to him that Rantanen is widely inconsistent. When Rantanen is on he looks amazing, but when he is off he looks really bad.

I don't have an opinion on that. Only watched him at the WJC. In general it's tough to evaluate teenagers playing against men. I'm not entirely convinced by the word of single scout on that but even if it's true I don't know what that means.

Looking at people's reports at hfboards, he has been getting loads more responsibility after the tournament. At the same time, the team is a sinking ship as far as I can tell, and a kid like him can't do much about that.

Lists probably overreacted to his performance at the WJC. He could be available for the Flames. Teräväinen was a late riser who eventually dropped to Chicago. Could be a similar situation.

Crouse in the top 5 is insane to me.

If my team has a top 10 pick and leaves a Marner, Barzal or Provorov on the table to draft Crouse, Im throwing up in my mouth.

Its not that he is a bad prospect, because he is not. In fact hes probably a pretty safe bet to play in the NHL, but his high end upside is as low as I have ever seen for a forward being talked about going in the top 10.

I would love to see the Oilers end up with him.

What are peoples' feelings about Brandon Carlo? 6'5" RH defenceman and ranked around where we might be picking. Seems like a good fit for us...

I really liked his outlet pass during the top prospects game. But i'm happy just having a mid-first rounder at all and wasn't watching with any real investment in the pick.

Would be a brilliant pick IMO for the Flames. For such a big man he skates really well. Hockey IQ is good. Makes good passes. I think he'll be a steal in this draft if he gets to the Flames if they finish in the playoffs.

The thing with Carlo, is that he could jump earlier than he was expected to. Last year, Fleury wasn't expected to be a top 10 pick and Morin wasn't supposed to go 11th the year before. I could see a team in the 7-10 range take Carlo because of his size and abilities.

If that happens then one of the top forwards will drop, take the best player available.
