In that thread, someone asked who has read the books, and who's just watching the show. Several people replied with "I just watch the show. I don't want to ruin the tv show by reading the books". Had just one person said it, I wouldn't have thought much of it. Two raised an eyebrow. More just made me "WTF?"

Actually I do know someone from my work who watched S1 and was into it so he started reading the books. But then he decided that while the show was good, the books were too geeky for him to continue with.
|
And for me, that's a totally valid reason not to read the books.

Just saw the thread, don't know why they added the rape scene. Wasn't in the book, totally contravenes the arc of Jamie's character in the book which I liked.

I agree but I think the reason they did that in the show was because Jamie was becoming too likable too soon.

I'm really confused still as to why Joffrey would have wanted Bran dead

I don't think he especially did. It wasn't about Bran as much as it was Joffrey's twisted way of trying to "help." Kid had major daddy issues at the time, this was while Robert Baratheon was still alive.

Still a weak motive. Kinda seems like a plot twist Martin didn't flesh out much

Where is this question coming from? I'm not remembering the incident...or are you referring to the guy who attacked him when he was in bed after the fall?
If so, Joffrey overhears Robert say something that Bran would be better off dead so he some how tries to help in a literal and very twisted way.

I just never felt that was a reasonable motive. Joffrey was sick and twisted, but since when did he try to help anyone? And to find his uncles/Little Finger's dagger and give it to a random mercenary from God knows where, and then to find some money to give to him. Seems all strange

Right. Perhaps "help" isn't the right word. Maybe more like Robert's words planted an idea/opportunity for Joffrey to kill someone.
But yes, definitely vague in the books and perhaps intentionally. I really like that there isn't closure on everything...this for example or the fate of Benjen Stark. I definitely do not buy into the theory that Benjen is Coldhands. If the series concluded without any further information I wouldn't be disappointed. It really adds to the [I]realistic[I] nature of the series. In reality, people go missing and are never found dead or alive. There aren't black and white answers to everything.

Joffrey wasn't motivated to help Bran, he was motivated to do something his father would approve of. For access to money and the dagger, well Robert left crap everywhere, a dagger could easily go missing from his collection, and Joffrey is the son of a king, sure it's not that hard to get a few gold coins to the first evil looking guy he see's. Remember he hired a pretty useless wannabee assassin, it wasn't like he bought some faceless man.

Still, it was all left out and barely mentioned. I loved, loved, loved the books, but can't really find this major plot event disappearing into a vague mist very credible

Well the one person who may know for sure one way or not is The Hound, whose status of living is still in question, so it's probably unlikely we find out, but still technically can be wrapped up if it was Joffrey, and GRRM wanted to clear up who tried to kill Bran. Also, I just realized, Bran could very well end up finding out himself through the Weirwoods, wouldn't put it past GRRM to have the hiring of the man that was going to kill Bran happen in the godswood.

Bran didn't go to Craster's Keep in the books did he?
EDIT: Oh and the ending! Lol now the show is spoiling the books?

No and Pod did not get sent off with Brianne either. This cuts down on the wandering about at least.

Ahahaha if he only knew. Novel readers have been waiting like 18 years for something to happen there.

The whole Crasters Keep part is new.
And the Pod part isn't that much of a change, he goes with her now instead of catching up later.

So apparently that ending scene is actual spoilers from Winds of Winter.
Nice surprise haha, that was really creepy.

I feel like a TV watcher that has just been given a spoiler regarding what is going to happen. Great episode, but I am a bit worried about the pace the books are being written and the pace the show seems to be going.
