Do they even have the cap space for that? I don't think Burns' son would be pleased with this.

Who discusses signing next season UFA's 5 games into the season?
Bob Stauffer is no good.

Brent Burns will be 32 after this season and currently earns $5.76M.
Last season was obviously the 'Brent Burns Show' and credit to him, he was amazeballs.
But how much do you offer a 32 year old defenceman a year removed from his career year? Assuming he doesnt repeat or improve this season?
The answer? $7M x 7 years.
This is a typical Oilers move. Pay top dollars to declining players during their twilight years. They did it with Khabibulin, they did it with Ference and they did it with Sheldon Souray just to name a few.
Yeah....they should go back to this outstandingly successful well.

The Flames offered 6.75 million over 6 years, that could be a good comparable. Most teams do not sign 33 year old dmen longterm, that is just a bad practice.

Its a risky practice certainly, but some players can be worth it.
The jury is still out on Gio, but thats certainly a worrisome contract.

Sounds like a quasi legal way to tamper or influence Burns.
I want them to sign him for $7 million plus a year which is what he'll get.
With Draisaitl probably getting between 6 and 7 next year.
Then the year after Nurse getting probably 5 to 6, Davidson coming up to a new deal, and Connor's probably 11 to 12 million, the Oilers will end up going into rebuild mode in a hurry because they'll be top salary heavy without much coming in that's going to be able to take up the slack at ELC.

As long as McDavid is on that team they'll always be competitive

Yep. Unfortunately he's the type of player UFA's want to play with. You can deny that but I can point to Lucic. The guy flew to Edmonton in a McDavid shirt. McDavid attracts players. The next 10 years are going to be nauseating.

The oilers were going 100 mph to absolutely no where and thats with 3 first round picks. Heading into a new building with such a garbage management and a team that flat out sucks would have been disastrous .
Like seriously imagine last offseason or this one without mcdavid???
I'm convinced that the nhl realized the oilers had to be competitive going to their new building. Them winning the McDavid lottery is no fluke.
Can you imagine this season for the oilers with no McDavid? ?

Bahahahahaha, of all the conspiracy theories, the ones that benefit strong Canadian markets are always the funniest.
Edmonton was quite possibly the last place the NHL wanted McDavid to go to. They had already attempted to put measures in place to make sure they wouldn't get another first overall.

Hey fans, buy our heritage classic jersey, it may or may not be very very similar to the jersey you all bought last year.
Jets heritage jersey is lovely.

Really? It looks remarkably similar to a Calgary move.

Yeah no, they'll become a one line one defenseman pair team that gets pummeled.
They'll have weak depth and unless they learn to draft beyond the first round will always fall to stubbed toes and ouchies.
Their window is this year and next year.
After that if McDavid grinds them for 12 million, they'll go into a perpetual rebuilding program.

You're talking about the Gio contract, and that one isnt paying dividends at the moment.
The major difference is that we didnt have to lure Gio as a Free Agent.

Too early to say for sure, but they actually look like a decent hockey team right now. That said, they've had a terribly easy schedule thus far aside St. Louis. Calgary twice, Carolina, Winnipeg, and Buffalo. I wouldn't get too worried yet.

Just wait for the injuries to occur
That's often one of the things that gets the Oilers
