Reading Mckenzie's tweets about it, I don't think it's a massive overpayment, it's a hopefully upgrade for a team really hoping for a cup or bust season and the 1st wil be not much different than a high 2nd, and removes a contract the Bruins don't want and flips also the guy Nash is replacing and who doesn't really fit anywhere else in the lineup with Nash arriving.
That aside, I don't expect the Flames to try and enter the arms race for cup or bust this year, but the fallout from this trade or a big West trade will have a ripple down effect in other western teams.
If that big trade or the ripple down effect sees SJ, LA, ANA etc, teams all around the Flames to make the playoffs, getting better, I don't think Treliving stands as pat as he may plan or even prefer. And the sooner those trades occur the more times teams like the Flames have to reevaluate and react, was my point.
I just can't see the Flames being 100% satisfied that this is the roster that has the depth to make the playoffs and win a round. And this is still assuming you get Smith back in the next week or so and Versteeg back at some point, but you would still need depth.
And they need to make the playoffs for a number of reasons.
