That’s my perception as well. If Johnny walks I wouldn’t mind adding him on the back end. Becomes the #1D. Ideally I’d hope they’d rebuild but I definitely see room to grow on defence, especially in a division with McDavid and MacKinnon.

He's unlikely to return if the Flames lose Gaudreau and Tkachuk? We wouldn't have space if we didn't lose them.

They can have him for mid to upper $4M.
Liked what he brought in the second half of last season, but wouldn't want to give him $4.5 to $5M.
Also Strickland would love Tkachuk to leave...he's been hinting at Matthew to St.Louis for a while.

Presume he's eluding to free agents not eager to sign here if we're looking like we're rebuilding.
I doubt Zad stays regardless, more money will be offered from elsewhere.

I feel like all these mid-level players asking for $4 or $5 million are gonna be in for a big surprise. Contenders are all capped out because they are paying their superstars and not middling guys.

Exactly. We lose Johnny just sign someone else isn’t a reality as why would anyone sign here when we just lost our best player. Combine that with Tkachuk who had 104 points and is 24 and 1 year from UFA status. He might not sign here even if Johnny stays. Johnny goes he’s gone imo too.
So what UFA signs here no Tkachuk or Gaudreau. Lol people definitely being over optimistic how this plays out if Johnny walks

Johnny walks, trade Tkachuk, make Markstrom believe he plays the Oilers every night
Bedard is ours

I think you'd more likely make a trade for replacements if you want a quality player on LW

A lot of teams are looking for a goalie. If they rebuild I'm sure markstrom would waive to go to a team like the caps, leafs, maybe even devils.
Lots of teams would want Lindholm, same as hanifin, and anyone who wants a shot at a cup would want to leave too.

If they were dedicated to a complete deconstruction and rebuild, I think you would need to look at moving Lindholm too. Dollar for dollar, he might be the most valuable tradable asset that the Flames have. It would also be a waste of his time for a player on a sweet contract in his prime to have to dwell on a bottom feeder until that contract expires.
You could get a ransom for a Selke caliber center with his contract.

Trade Markstrom also then. Let Vladar start and sign some bum backup. Let the Wolf lead the pack in the AHL. 4 years from now start to become an absolute force as you move into a new building. Dare to dream boys.

Yep. What is he 28? 4x4 I would have no problem with as long as he's got a coach that has a clue, as he did this season.
