it's the worst kind of purgatory - knowing that things won't improve and that you don't even have to hope for a good display, but also knowing that terrible performances and beatdowns have no consequences. Bleak.

Surprised they even let Shaw play again after that elbow to the head, looked a clear concussion.

Uhhhh how was that not a penalty on Telles? Pretty obvious there.

Edit: Looks like he just about got the ball first.

That Silva goal was hilarious.

Luke Shaw has been a nightmare defensively lately.

Lol! They should have waited to buy Newcastle....they're dead last now. Maybe they could have gotten a discount.

In hindsight the timing of the purchase was really odd to do in-season. This isn't a good team and now you have a roster full of guys who know most of them are all likely gone in the future, which makes their will to fight for the club pretty low. I also can't see them getting any big signings in January because they could be bottom of the table by then and who wants to join a club heading to the Championship? Wonder if the Saudis just divest the club if they are relegated and buy another PL club instead.

The Saudi government has been trying to purchase Newcastle for many years, and they've had several agreements knocked back several times for several reasons by both the Premier League and the British government. They don't care if they get relegated; if anything, that may be a bonus as it will allow them to construct a better squad for when they come back up, in addition to playing eight more league matches next season to help the team gel.

Newcastle will win a Premier League title within ten years whether they go down to the Championship in May or not. Their ownership group, which is "definitely not" the Saudi government, have literally unlimited resources. This is a sports washing project designed to paper over the many criminal acts of the current regime, who murdered a Saudi journalist a few years ago.

The only thing stopping them from going out and spending a billion pounds in January is the fact that they know everyone will be watching to ensure that they don't breach the FFF (Financial Fair Play) rules. The parachute payments mean that the difference between relegation and staying up this season would be like you or I losing a $10 bill when we're out for a day at the Stampede.

I dont think it's a guarantee that Newcastle will come straight back up if they go down. It's a dog fight in the champ, they will have a huge target on their backs and Eddie howe is an ok manager but far from elite. Qpr tried to buy their way to the top years ago and failed pretty miserably. Saudis have way more money but you wonder if they go down and stumble how much patience they will have. Maybe 2 seasons in the champ?

But far from certain for me they will go down. Brentford and watford are starting to look terrible and watford already burned their manager change. Also Norwich finally look like they start to come around and sack their manager today, terrible move. Burnley without dyche would be bottom half of the table in the champ imo. Tight race to the bottom this season

Newcastle won't be going after Championship level players. We're talking Ronaldo, Messi, Mbappe, etc. The only thing that is going to stop them from completely dominating world football within five years are the financial fair play rules. Getting relegated this season won't make a dent to their bank balance, it will only help to slow their path to dominance as they won't get as much television revenue.

I mean getting relegated will hurt their recruitment. Messi, Ronaldo, Mbappe etc...aren't coming to play 46 games of Championship football and no continental football at all. So they'll probably be left trying to poach top Championship or lower PL teams players, but then they will demand ridiculous fees because why help a competitor who is filthy rich? Plus if they get relegated some of the few actual good players they have might want to leave for greener pastures, complicating things even more.

FFP is going to be a compounding hurdle for them as well since they still play in Newcastle. Not exactly prime recruiting material when the other big dogs are in Madrid, Barcelona, Paris etc. They're going to be stuck in a catch 22, don't have the players to build success and having no success to attract players in spite of the location.

The top tier players will get monster money anywhere, no chance they're picking Newcastle.

They'll build a strong team, but I don't think it's going to be as drastic as people think.

It kind of happens in stages though. They can't go after those players today, and there are a few reasons. At the outset, they'll overpay for a bunch of donkeys. Eventually, they'll be bringing in better players, but at the beginning there is virtually zero percent chance that any top players are going there. Same with managers. They need someone, so they end up with Howe. We all know that in 4-5 years when that team is really showing the impact of Saudi billions that he won't be the manager, but they can't lure those guys yet.

Apparently, with FFP (as much as it matters), they can spend about $180-200m. That is a lot, but it's also 2-3 good players. And realistically, they need about 6-7 good players, so this is a longer term project.

Zero shots on target for Spurs today. Got to wonder if Conte’s seat is starting to get hot.

I agree that getting relegated won't be a good thing for them, but I really doubt that it will harm them long-term the way it would for clubs like Watford, Villa, etc.

As for bringing in two or three players, I think you might be off a bit there. Just look at who they could potentially sign for free on pre-contract agreements seven weeks from now:

Kylian Mbappe
Paulo Dybala
Ousmane Dembele
Lorenzo Insigne
Andrea Belotti
Niklas Sule
Jesus Corona
Matthias Ginter
Jason Denayer
Angel Di Maria
Luis Felipe
Juan Cuadrado
Sergi Roberto
Serge Aurier
Isco
Luka Modric
Gareth Bale
Ivan Perisic
Simon Kjaer
Cristian Pavon
Axel Witsel
Luis Suarez
Marcelo

Here are the free agents coming up in England, who they can sign on July 1:

Paul Pogba
Antonio Rudiger
Adreas Christensen
James Tarkowski
Todd Cantwell
Jesse Lingard
Alexandre Lacazette
David Brooks
Cesar Azpilicueta
Divock Origi
Mohamed Elneny
Hugo Lloris
Jordan Ayew
Teemu Pukki
Pascal Gross

They could easily sign six or seven of these guys on big money contracts without paying a transfer fee.
