I imagine he dissolved the company? Have the victims said anything about pursuing him for further damages?

What’s the minimum commercial policy coverage he’d carry, by law? $2m? $5m?
Have to think those dollars are gonna be quickly spoken to with the long term care needed for many of those young lads.

I’d assume the families had an injury lawyer sue the driver? And the insurance company of driver would “defend “, basically reaching a settlement?

Would insurance even pay out anything if he was negligent?

Of course it would. Your insurance will still pay out if your negligence causes a crash.

Hopefully that epic gofund me will help many of the families out. I’d imagine insurance would be paying out as well. Anyone know much about that?

In BC insurance pays out if you have done nothing wrong what so ever at times, I had a foster kid walk in front of a car a few years ago middle of the night wearing black, probably with head phones on, got 3 million out of ICBC, car wasn't speeding driver wasn't drunk, purely the kids fault frankly

I’ve heard of stories like like that in the States. In Alberta I’ve heard if you get injured when not at fault the payouts are quite low? Hopefully these families get everything they deserve

I was actually happy with the payout, kid will need significant help for the rest of his life, mum sued everyone for 12 million as the kid (who was a really bright nice lad) I was on the hook for 3 million, BMW for 3, ICBC and the driver for 3 each, in the end everyone got dropped and ICBC paid out.

My lawyer just about cacked herself when I told her if I didn't have to pay for it I was happy if the kid got my insurance money as well!!!

Thanks fellas.

I’ll clarify in that, does the Truck Company Owner dissolve his company to avoid paying a further settlement? Can he legally do so? I’m in agreement, that fortunately there’s the GoFundMe dollars for these young men.

Saskatchewan is a no fault province, I'm assuming the bus was registered here, the payouts are predefined based on the injuries. Unless the bus company registered as Tort, or maybe if one of the kids had tort on their insurance or their parents, I don't think they have much in the way of options for suing.

I know with some kinds of insurance, it can affect things. Like if you have a business and it burns down and they find some type of negligent fire hazard. I guess I just thought that if a company wasn't following legal safety rules and had an accident, an insurance company might fight it.

This to me is not a severe enough punishment relative to the Driver.

Quote:
The convictions include failing to keep a daily drivers log, neglecting to ensure his drivers complied with safety regulations, and having more than one daily logbook.

Singh also pleaded guilty to not having or following a written safety program.
It appears from these charges he didn’t care about Safety requirements

Pretty cool.

An arena in Lethbridge will be getting a name change as the city honours the memory of local hockey player Logan Boulet, one of 16 people killed in the Humboldt Broncos crash last year.

On Monday, city council unanimously voted in favour of re-christening Adams Park Ice Centre as the Logan Boulet Arena. The Lethbridge native was killed twhen he Humboldt Broncos team bus collided with a semi-truck on April 6, 2018.

The Adams will be around for a while especially with the MAAA looking to make it their permanent home. There was also talk that the name would stick around with the area and whatever would be to come next there. Civic will be getting demolished shortly anyways once the new Y is open on the west side. Either way, it's a very cool thing for Logan's memory to live on.

The Civic will not be demolished with the old Y. Those aren't together.

Civic is close to end of life though. They are hoping it will last until the new twin ice arena on the east side of the river gets built.

I can’t believe it’s already been 1 year since this terrible tragedy

I wish all the families and friends directly affected by this mass loss continued healing and want them to know that they are always in the thoughts and hearts of many people.

"It's hard for me to believe a year is gone but I also say to so many people, it feels like I've lived a lifetime because this past year as we grieve, we are grieving publicly," said Laurie Thomas, mother of Evan Thomas, one of the hockey players killed in the collision.

Indeed, it's a grief that has unfolded at the forefront of public consciousness. Stories about the crash, the recovery of survivors and most recently, the emotionally-charged sentencing for truck driver Jaskirat Singh Sidhu, have dominated national news coverage.

Bump

The “Humboldt driver” is facing deportation and is fighting it…with support from some of the victims families.

Quote:
His name is Jaskirat Sidhu. Most people know him only as "The Humboldt Driver."
Quote:
On April 6, 2018, Sidhu was tasked with transporting a giant load of peat moss on tandem trailers, across Saskatchewan on unfamiliar rural roads. He had challenges from the beginning. First, his trailers got stuck in the snow and he needed to find a tow. Then his tarps came loose and he feared losing his load, and finally, at 5 p.m. while he was checking his rear view mirror to see if his ties were solid, he missed a stop sign. A chartered bus, carrying the Humboldt Broncos hockey club, was approaching the intersection and couldn't stop in time. The two vehicles collided, killing 16 people and injuring 13 others on the bus. Canada plunged into mourning.
Quote:
Sidhu comes from a middle-class farming family in India. He immigrated to Canada in 2014 with a degree in commerce. His then girlfriend Tanvir Mann arrived in this country the previous year after completing a nursing degree in India.
Quote:
Just three months before the horrifying collision, Mann and Jaskirat became husband and wife in a fairy-tale wedding back in India.

They didn't take a honeymoon, and returned to Canada where Mann had been accepted into a dental hygienist program in Toronto. Sidhu picked up a second job to support Mann going back to school. A friend suggested trucking and Sidhu completed a one-week training course. He then drove supervised for two weeks. When Sidhu got behind the wheel on that April day in 2018, it was one of his first solo long-haul jobs.

"Sometimes I sit and I hear the kids crying, the children crying, and I see all of the devastated pictures in my mind. And people are rushing, the firefighters, all of the first responders. Those things, they're still with me."
Quote:
Sidhu is not a Canadian citizen. He is a permanent resident. Under immigration rules, anyone convicted of a crime that carries a sentence greater than six months is subject to deportation.
Quote:
In January 2021, Green submitted a 415-page binder outlining why Sidhu should not be deported, citing his extreme level of remorse, lack of criminal history, low risk to reoffend and the fact neither drugs, alcohol nor excessive speed were a factor in the collision. Hundreds of letters of public support have also been included in the file. Among them, letters from three Humboldt families, including the parents of Evan Thomas, who died in the crash.
