I drove back from Fort McMurray yesterday after being evacuated from one of the oil sands sites located about 30KM north of the city. We were lucky to make it out when we did, as they closed the roads about an hour after we left our camp.

The drive from Fort McMurray to Edmonton was pretty crazy, and took about twice as long as it would normally, partly due to traffic, and partly due to the number of cars stuck on the side of the highway without gas. It took us about 3 hours to move between Wandering River (the first gas station after Fort Mac) to just after the Lac la Biche turnoff. There were literally hundreds of cars waiting at Wandering River to get gas.

Anyways the point of my post is to highlight the people who were standing alongside the highway supplying motorists with everything from food, water, fuel, diapers, and baby food. It was great to see the generosity of these people, who were standing outside on the side of the highway in 32 degree heat, to help people make it out of Fort Mac. About every 10km we saw a group of people doing this, and I just wanted to share my experience. There were also numerous people who lived near the highway offering to take people in who had to be evacuated.

The CP Community has, collectively and on their own volition, donated $15,235 $15,335 $15,485 $15,535 $16,035 $16,835!!! to the Red Cross (give or take,) not including undisclosed donations or the match donations from companies not specified, or the Federal government's pledge to match them.

Amazing stuff. This is truly an amazing community of people, and we should all be proud to be a part of it.

Would someone be interested in going around and collecting cans from forum members for the bottle depot, then donating the proceeds on CP's behalf?

Seems like it's a preemptive move. You'd be hired then sent to work in FMM at a later date doing the jobs outlined in that link in the "recovery phase".

Currently it is still "response phase" and it seems like it will be in such a phase for a bit.

Yup.

Just getting the word out to start helping for the people who want to contribute. Great job for anyone who has some time to contribute.

Came here for more info and to add $50.00

A friend's sister recently moved to FM from here to get married. Yes, he's in the oil business somehow. What a first year marriage present this is.

His dad is ex NHL but can't remember his name.

In any case, found the thread about PIMKing. Holy crap!

Also found you guys are more awesome than ever.

Now give me $100,000. and I'll start posting here again.

Put me down for $500, or I guess $1,000, since Justin is matching my donation with another 500 he took from me in taxes.

The NHL? I know the Flames and Oilers donated $100K each, but the League did too? If so that is news and a very classy move by them.
