Still disagree. I think if you crunch the numbers through history the bust rate for forwards and defensemen is pretty much the same. Not sure why fans seem to think defensemen are riskier, I don't think history supports that at all.
For some reason people choose to remember the defensemen who are taken early and bust and forget the forwards who do the same.
Goalies are the risky ones. Forwards and d-men have very similar bust/turn out rates.

I think why that perception exists is that we hear that defence is the hardest position in the league to learn and what we see in junior isn't what we necessarily see in the pro game.
Not trying to convince you otherwise. Like to have respectful back and forth. If our scouts deem a d prospect as the bpa at our pick, I'm behind them.

Assuming we don't pick in the top three my hopes are pinned on Chychrun. A top four-type dman who is close to NHL-ready at 18. Should be a starter at 20. So rare.
Also, any talk of dangling Moneyhands as trade bait this year is insane.

Chychrun or Dubois would be incredible outside the top 3!

Henry Fool's posting of the Laine videos only makes the inevitability of him not going to the Flames that much more excruciating...

The top 3 guys are all that exciting. And the guys rated 4 and 5 aren't much of a step down. Hard to be disappointed this draft unless we end up drafting 6th or lower and even then we'll still get a top prospect.

Who am I kidding? I haven't seen any of these guys outside of the WJC. I'm sure we'll get a good player but I'm hoping for one of the Fins. I'll cry if one of them ends up in Edmonton.

I've heard after the first 15 or so things flatten out. I won't be surprised if BT turns those 2nds into a roster player at the draft.

Given how hard it it to trade for top two defensemen it makes sense for EDM to grab Chychrun or trade down and grab Chychrun regardless of how high they are picking. We may be able to trade up with them and swap picks if they are drafting higher than us.

A whole nation will go into mourning if either of the Finns are selected by Edmonton.

Lots of talk EDM might just straight up trade their #1 overall this year to get a top two defenseman. It is one of the more valuable assets that they could move. Do they really need yet another high pick forward? They almost can't taken another one unless they've already dealt one or two of Yakupov, Hall, RNH, Eberle.
Trade it, draft Chychrun or trade down and draft Chychrun are the scenarios that make the most sense. Things could change if they can move a couple of their high pick forwards before they head into the draft.

Craig Button really pumping the tires of Pierre-Luc Dubois on the Deadline show during a Mock Draft segment, has him going to the Flames at 5. Saying he could establish himself in that group with the Finns after Matthews by the end of the season.
Can't say I disagree. Big fan of his.

I prefer Dubois to Tkachuk or Nylander. If the Flames pick 4 or 5 I hope they take Chychrun or Dubois.

At this point I'd be shocked if we didn't walk away from the draft with one of the following 6 players: Matthews(C), Laine(RW), Puljujarvi(RW), Chychrun(D), Tkachuk(LW), Dubois(LW/C)

My order in preference for the Flames
1. Laine
2. Puljujarvi
3. Matthews (don't like his attitude and him going to Switzerland)
4. Dubois
5. Chychrun
6. Sergachev
That's not how I'd rank them overall though.

Am bored of the talking heads on trade deadline day - so have resorted to writing limericks.
Here is my first attempt:
There was a big Finnish winger named Laine
His one-timer and his power were fine eh
In the standings the Flames sank
Some might even say tank
So on draft day the Flames could say mine-ayyy!

1) Matthews - Developing in Switzerland was genius and the talent level is insane. He will probably be a better player than Tavares. Skill and hockey sense down the middle... that's what the draft is for.
2A) Laine. He brings an element our team does not have so he's really easy to slot in. Especially in taking our bottom power play straight to the top third of the league.
2B) Puljujarvi. He brings a different element our team does not have so again really easy to slot in. Especially taking our 25th ranked possession to middle pack. Probably won't produce the instant results Laine will but with a year or two development will be the absolute perfect compliment to Bennett
4) Chychrun. I want a forward. But if Chychrun is the BPA, you shop Kylington, you shop Andersson, you shop Hickey to get a forward.
5) Dubois. Skill seems to be pulling him upwards. Skill is good. Skill helps you hold onto the puck. But be prepared to send him back to Junior for a year, maybe two, he won't jump into the lineup right away.
6) Tkachuk. Would you guys add Landeskog to our top 6? I would. In an instant. That's what Tkachuk is IMO.
7) McLeod. I'm not convinced there's an excellent offensive finisher but I'm pretty much convinced you've got a guy with a very good chance of being an extremely effective two-way NHLer with the way he skates, and if he does add the finish then you've got a dangerous and FAST top 6 forward. That said if he's their guy they have to do a lot more due diligence than I have, you don't want Michael Grabner you want Patrick Marleau.
8) Sergachyov. Another BPA in my eyes with a pretty huge ceiling.
I don't think we'll draft past eight.
