They probably dragged him from the AESC while he was holding onto the door frame kicking and screaming.

Least that's the impression I get from the media reports. He didn't want to leave the Flames or Abbotsford organization. He apparently wasn't that unhappy with how we were using him.

I'll put this here:

http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/c...ing-right-way/

Quote:
The Calgary Flames are Canada’s most loveable hockey team, the new Pesky Sens. They work their tails off every single night, and though an entire game’s worth of cheering was stuffed into about a 20-minute window for fans at the Saddledome, even at the exorbitant prices that Canadian NHL teams charge, the people got their money’s worth in pure toil and sweat.
Quote:
When you are in Year 1 of The Great Rebuild, this is a place to start. Or perhaps, as Flames fans look up the highway—and down in the standings—at all those sweethearts in Edmonton, it is THE place to start. “It’s a way of life we’re trying to instill,” Hartley declared after practice the day before. “The Monahans, the Brodies, the Backlunds, the Baertschis, the Colbornes. My job is to make sure they grow straight in this organization. I don’t want to create monsters. Guys who feel because they score 10 goals, there’s an entitlement. Whether you’re the most talented guy on the team, or the least talented guy, hard work is not an option.”
Quote:
But the question on Calgary radio was, “Doesn’t this run against every tenet of a rebuild?” With No. 1 defenceman Mark Giordano out long-term, why would GM Jay Feaster move 22-year-old Roman Horak and a goalie (Laurent Broissoit) who is fresh out of junior, for a 27-year-old, third-pairing D-man making $3.5 million per season? Why not just play the cards you have, and collect the high draft pick at the end of the season?
Then you watch these players play, and you realize why: Management owes it to this roster to allow them to at least compete. That is why Smid is here. How could Feaster and president of hockey operations Brian Burke possibly look down at this roster and not lend a hand? This team simply will not quit, even though—on paper—the Flames have been a lottery team since Day 1.
Quote:
Besides, if there’s one thing they’ve learned from watching the Oilers from down here, it is that you should avoid a losing culture at all costs. The Flames aren’t winning a whole lot, but so far, the losses don’t really feel like losses. “We’re giving a lot of teams a tough time,” said Matt Stajan. “I feel like our record should be a little better than it is. It’s something we all talked about in training camp. Everyone is going to buy in. That’s the only way we’re going to be successful. You come to the rink, you put your worker’s hat off, and you work your butt off. That’s how it’s going to be here.”

I hate this trade, for selfish reasons.

The Oilers/OKC Barons signed a garbage goalie and assigned him to the team here in QC. Now that they've traded for another young goalie fresh out of juniors, there's no chance of them calling up this slouch.

I still hate the Oilers.

Project Bryzgalov fails, Oilers finish 30th. Flames 25th. Flames win lottery, take Ekblad. MacT flips #### on live television. Calling it now.

^ I'd like to add something about all 27 of their UFA/RFA players at the end of this year refusing to sign and moving to new teams completely disintegrating their team and prospect pool.

Chris Wescott ‏@TheChrisWescott 1h #Oilers view Laurent Brossoit as a future number one goalie. MacTavish says they didn't have that in that age bracket before Smid trade.

While I don't disagree with that, I still stand by my statement that Brossoit has as much of a chance at being a number one goalie than Olivier Roy did 2 years ago. Unfortunately Roy hasn't progressed at all in those 2 years, but it's very likely that Brossoit will end up going the same route Roy has been on the past 2 years. The Flames are banking on the fact that Gillies will be a better goalie than Brossoit, so Brossoit's value with us would never have been that high. Think Matt Keetley when he first entered the AHL.

I don't think the Flames are banking on any one goalie being then next guy, they seem to just consistently bring in goalies and seeing who will pick up the ball and run with it. That's generally the right way to do it, naming a "goalie of the future" rarely ever works.

I still think the goalie future for the Flames is Gillies/Ortio

Yeah, maybe, probably?

I think the guy with the most potential is Gillies too but that shouldn't stop the Flames from drafting one in the later rounds this year and continue to mine other options as well.

Based on what I've seen from him so far, I could see Berra being a long term solution as well. He's young enough and looks to have a lot of potential.

Disagree. Roy doesn't have the same style and size that LB has. And LB was one of our most fit prospects. To me when I watched Roy in junior he was one of those guys who I thought was a good junior goalue but was going to struggle to make the NHL. I think Brossoit is a much better prospect and is a much better prospect than Roy was at his age.

Keetley also was not as highly regarded as LB. His best year was as an overages was it not? Keetley just didn't have the fundamentals as good as Brossoit does.

No reason to equate 3 completely different players and pretend there aren't big differences in their games. The main thing they have in common is they are goalies who played junior. From following prospects I think LB is the best of the bunch as a 20 year old.
